Waitaphedia Exploration

Post by zuky »

Heading to waitaphedia this weekend for another look see. Turning right at the first hair pin this time to see where this goes (or doesn't go) Nothing to serious just there to see where the other tracks go and see if one links through (or used to) as I suspect. Will involve some walking and some track work. Hopefully we'll make it to the slip to do some more work there...

Will be at the track end by about 9 - 10 am

Might see some of you there?

P.S took the side track at the top and headed out that way last weekend. The track needs some love but it's pretty cool 8) goes for about 2 km and then meets some walking tracks.

runs off to the right. you can park there at the hall and walk the old railway track back over the road and through the old tunnel, at the end of the tunnell its quite a view, well worth a quick stop. ..... if it's the same spot i'm thinking of.

Look for the brig and the Waitawheta Falls, ya can't miss it

We went right at the junction as per the plan. Went about 1500 meters to a farmers gate. Had to winch a couple of times due to lack of driving skill but nothing to major. Then we turned around and came back with some improvement in the driving :)

We started up the other track which we hoped would link through to the waterfall area of the main track. About 100 meters up there was a tree across the track so we broke out the chain saw. Then about 250 meter past that there was a huge tree across the track so we broke out the legs. Ben and I we're keen to clear it but the slaves we had selected went into rebelion and wouldn't do as they we're told (i.e cut the huge tree out of the way).

We went for a walk and it appears to be a while (2 - 3 years) since the track was used so there is a bit of growth on it. You can still clearly see where it goes up to a point where it opens out into and old logging camp area (or that's what I think it looks like) Then it continues on a short way to the river and then dies out as it heads up the hill. It would need some serious sweat to get it open again but I am a keen starter if people want to give it a go.

If we RESTORE it back the way it should be... i.e clear then it would make a second loop in there and add a good flat camping area

After all the walking we staggered back to the trucks zipped around the loop and headed home. We had to make a stop at the river for a clean which was great untill the boys managed to flood the interior of my truck and get the carpet wet :? Not so cool seen as they didn't even get it clean.

But a good day and track all the same.

:D Hey Ben, we'l have to bale my old man up on Monday when he joins us and get him to describe the layout of the tracks to us. He knows it intimatly, and by the sounds of it and from memory, after the fallen trees is the loop track. We used to come out of there to join the road, and the farmers gate is where you enter the main track.

Remind me to hit him up and between what we remeber from that disscussion we should be able to figure it out when we get there 8) 8)

That tree sound like a job for winches and Dwayne with his 96cc Still

When I say zipped around the loop it was a wind up for the boys who got stuck for a week. We just went just did the 750 meter loop around at the start which is up the old track which no one seems to use and then around through the by pass back to the main track. The actual loop is about 7 km from memory and takes a bit longer.

Sounds like we need to organise some of these chain saws down there. And a weeed eater to mow the grass at the camp site :) The sooner we clear the track to there the sooner we can have a beer

The more people the better. I'm off to Oz again for work in a week until december but ben t will be around and able to point peoples chain saws in the right direction.
