The RD28 is a consumer grade version of the LD28. The GU came only with the RD28. Swapping to a TD42 maybe difficult as the RD28 GUs had a different gearbox and lower diff ratios.
An interesting and inexpensive option would be rebuilding and turboing an LD28, in theory that should go straight in. People may laugh for having an LD28 powered GU but it is a legendary engine and far more brutal in its construction than the RD.

Um no it won't 'go straight in'
But yes pete a rd28 from a laurel with some bits swapped over will make it live again. Or just throw an rb30det in for some lols

Have managed to source a ld28 from a laurel
Is it a matter of bolt out bolt in? Will need to do head gasket on it

buy a rusted out R31 skyline station wagon with a rb30 keep the engine loom ecu bell housingand associated bits ...i.e engine mounts and air flow meter. scrap the rest.
Then when ya kill that (you'll crack the head) get on TM and buy a complete Rb25 de head loom ecu and AFM...(use the RB25 head bolts as the RB30 ones are too long... then find a set of traffic lights on a saturday night and watch the boy racers jaws drop.
