Ex RNZAF Defender

Hi Team,

New to this so go easy!

Brought an Ex RNZAF Defender a few months ago and have just got round to tidying her up as a daily driver.

It's a LD28 turbo conversion with the typical biff's and bangs expected from it's half a million km's!

Couple of things that I need to get sorted to get her back up and running are as follows and any help would be much appreciated,

1. At low speed it is pumping out white smoke but no problem at high speed, thinking a turbo issue/ injectors, have found a stuck wastegate which we are investigating.

2. Lack of air filter, the vehicle was sold with a round LR air cleaner but not fitted, any advice on sizing of air filter for an LD28 turbo, will the LR unit suffice?

As I said, a newbie to this and any help would be appreciated, i'm sure these things have been discussed in the past and apologies if covering old ground.

Looking forward to getting the ongoing project underway!!

Cheers

could use any filter really depends on your airbox etc,
ld28's often need attention around valve guide seals and valve stem wear,
mines the same white smoke till its up to temp and working

You need a big air cleaner, I used a Donaldson out off a MF combine, probably an 8 or 10 inch. It can't be too big.
Air is still pretty cheap, and the more you use the better.
You also need an extra big exhaust.

She looks a lot different from the Defenders the RNZAF used. Colour, alloys, bullbar to name a few. And from memory ours were V8 too.

Looks very tidy in white though, nicer than the faded olive green it once was.

I am waiting for when we sell off our old Range Rover ambulances, reckon they would be great starting points for campers.

Cheers, the unit I have should do the trick, any recommendation on bore size of exhaust, it's looking like it is on it's last legs so an upgrade could be on the cards!

My thinking is the Kiki injector pump, with regards to timing and advance mechanism. I have a 110 and a s3 with an LD28, soon to be turbo, it uses the original oil bath filter. The stock V8 cooper air cleaner would be more than satisfactory for an LD28 Turbo, I ran my previous 110 with a GM 6.2 Diesel on one worked a charm

Nice Rig too, should get along nicely with the LD28t and 5 Speed box. Are those discovery mag wheels?

I think I used a 2.5 inch exhaust, you don't need much for a muffler.
Remember to use a flexijoint near the turbo.
I did this in the early nineties .
Also remember the original sump is tiny, but you keep the horsepower sensible you won't have any problems.

Mine was putting out about 160 hp and had every problem you can imagine.
You would be in trouble if you dumped clouds of black smoke at the lights now.

Will try and keep it a fair bit tamer! Will look into the exhaust options

New plugs and water pump on the way, olde smokey no more! Previous owner had breather from rocker into pressurized side of turbo!

Running like a dream, just need to decide on a man size air cleaner, the one shown is totally undersized! Just need to find some room, the current option is a bit on the large size to fit anywhere in the engine bay, any ideas? or smaller options?

my ld28 in a landie 110 had a very similar/same filter housing as that big black cylindrical one in your photo. Possibly factory?
it was mounted at the front of the engine bay, on the drivers side.

if you check out the engine bay photo on the sister vehicle then you will see the original canister type filter tucked away on the front.

Have tried that option but to tight unless we modify the guards.

Is the canister air cleaner you have originally a V8 one that sat on top at the back of the engine?
If so its probably why its too big.
You may need to swap it for one from 4-cylinder, diesel or turbo diesel 90/110 and then it will fit.
