Fuel pump problems

Post by zukmeista »

Ok so I went for a WOF and failed due to O-ring on throttle linkage leaking, so went and got a new one. Seeing as I am planning on putting a turbo on it soon I though I would put the boost compensator on at the same time. Put it all together the same as it came apart and started it up, revs started to take off. Wound the idle screw out, no change. Any ideas? :?

Did you put it on with the fuel screw still in it? If so that is the most likely cause. U need to measure the fuel screw projection, remove it from the housing, then fit it on the injector pump and replace the fuel screw afterwards.

No I couldn't get it on with fuel screw in so pulled it out and put it back in the same place once it was on.

Ok - then the control linkeage must be jammed - you'll need to lift the cover again and check the arm is sitting correctly. When everything is correct and u have the cover back on u should be able to turn the top of the throttle shaft with your fingers until you feel the spring tension. Then make sure the lever goes on its splines in the right position. Hope all that makes sense -good luck :-)

It's definitely not jammed, it turns freely.
P.S thanks for helping.

You say you added the boost compensator?
Is it on correctly? and not pushing more fuel in?

Well from what I can see everything is in the right place. Took the throttle lever off and turned throttle shaft as far anticlockwise as it would go but still does it.

Turn the splined end of the control shaft as far as it will go towards it's idling position. Then slowly turn it the other way til you can JUST feel the spring tension. That's pretty much the position to slip the lever on the splines so that it abuts the idle screw when the idle screw is set roughly in its normal position. If it still won't respond to the throttle control there must be something wrong inside.

So you would have changed the whole top cap to add the compensator?
Throw up a photo of your pump with the compensator.
At a complete guess of the setup.
I would suspect the pin that runs in the tapered shaft on the end of the diaphragm is not seated correctly. (If its like any typical denso injector pump)
And its putting in more fuel thinking its on boost...
Take the cover off on top, remove the diaphragm make sure you match mark it and pull it out. Down the hole you should see a little pin sticking out..
Turn the throttle and with a stick push it back in and release the throttle. It should stay in.
Then you can put the diaphragm back in and reassemble...
Now the pin should sit on the shaft when throttle is applied and if boost is on the diaphragm will push down and the pin will follow the shaft taper and adjust fuel...

Well I did pull the diaphragm out to see how it worked, maybe I stuffed something up? Going to move it into the shed so I can work on it as it is pissing down up here...

Ok I had a look and that pin appears to be stuck in it's hole. It doesn't come out so I'm guessing thats the problem? What's the best way to fix it?

Got rid of the boost compensator and put the standard top back on and now it won't run at all. Cranking it with the accelerator down it will cough a bit like it's going to start but it doesn't.
