How hard is it to put a sj410 transfer case into a sj413, is it worth doing .Are the mounts the same ? does the speedo and gear leaver go in allright? Do the 410s have the plug for the 4wd light on the dash and do certain 410s have lower ratio transfers?Any info would be good

An '84 SJ410 t-case will bolt right up, has 12% lower gearing in both high & low range & your speedo, 4wd light & lever will all go on no worries. Look for the 410 case with the 4wd light sender to ID the right one.

If you've got both 413 & 410 cases you can merge some parts from each with a little machining & welding & end up with 12% lower high range & 80% lower low range, here's a rundown of how:

Is it just the 84 transfer that fits or is it 84 and on

SJ413s started in 85, so pretty much only 84 ones are useful. I had an 83 transfer and I couldnt use it too build a rockhopper. The link that clint posted is all I used to do mine. Machining was about $120. Definetly worth doing if you going to go to the trouble of changing transfer cases

I will try and find a sj410 case and see how it goes if i find it needs to be lower i might try and do the rocklobster :? . I've found a 85 case on trademe but he was unsure if it had the plug for the 4wd light ,is he right, can you get 85 410 case.does the rocklobster make it a bit slow on the road.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but i talked to someone about swaping transfer cases and he said its not only the 84 and on cases but it also has to be out off a sj410 flatdeck ute :?: Is this correct or can it just be out of any sj410 thats 84 and on,I just want to make sure before i spend my money

Some flatdecks have an even lower t/case than the 1984ish 410's . Look for a 410 with a 4wd switch and you should be pretty right . A pre 84 could be made to fit , but would invole swapping the drive flanges . To be honest thou if you find a 1984 with 4wd light you should make a 4.16:1 t/case out of the two . they are brilliant .

i have a 410 and 413 suzuki, i want to keep the 413 and sell the 410
i plan to put 31s on the 413 one day, should i swap the transfer boxs.. so the 413 has lower gearing?
also the 410 diffs are 4.11 the 413 is 3.9, is it worth swaping these iswell or instead of transfer? or would that be too much for 31s i want to do highway driving occasionally too.. 109kms ;)

From experience (some time ago) the 410 diffs and axles are a smaller diameter so are more prone to breakages especially with the increased load from bigger tyres etc.

I ran 30x9.5s on my 413 and it was too high geared (well for me anyway, about 10% too high) so I invested in another 413 tcase and a 410 case (with the 4wd light plug) and built a 4.16 rockhopper (kept the original one as a spare for if I changed trucks - it could come with me). First impressions were that it was brilliant but after a while I got sick of being too low geared (yes I said too low). If you are doing lots of rock hopping etc then go low, but if you are just looking to pull back the gearing increase caused by fitting bigger tyres then go for the 410 tcase as this will lower high and low range by the same amount. The high range reduction meant no more riding the clutch to get going on hill starts which made day to day driving more enjoyable.

I did mine several years ago (Al if you are on this site you may wish to comment on how it is going now -I sold it to by a hilux (bad move)).

When I get another zuk I will probably just go for the 410 case with 30x9.5s again as this gives me the best of all worlds.

The rockhopper meant that I had trouble clearing mud from tyres and had to switch from low to high all the time to get anywhere. Although I did enjoy the looks on peoples faces when the zuk climbed what seemed impossible accents and ambled down gnarly decents without breaking a sweat (no valve bounce heard anywhere)

Well back to lurking mode,

Heath Davis (no 4wd at present but I continue to look)

you can also get the r&p out of a vatara. autos have 4.62 to 1 r&p
and the manuls have 5.12 to 1 r&p i think.

i used to run 5.12 R&P and a 5.14 t-case from calmini
with 31s and loved it you can never go to LOW
you can always change up a gear

but the only problem was max speed in low was 55 kph

I forgot about the Rand P (from the front diff I think) vitara trick that combinned with a lower box would be the ideal solution unless you want more width in your axle then you could source hilux axles or maybe the MQ patrol ones (may be the model before so check first) and sling them under neath. Beauty of these would be they weigh more than the vehicle above so sidlings will never be an issue again (tongue firmly in cheek of course) nto to mention all the hilux ones get snapped up by everyone else first for bigger dollars.

Yeah get the 410 with light case and make a rockhopper that way.You can buy gears from oz but you will have no arm or leg after you get them here (about 1000. i think).I got my truck off Heath and he did the rockhopper so pick his brain (100kph on the open road no probs and low down when you need it)probable high on the list of MUST DO'S on a 413.Al
