What size tyres do i run for taupo 100
As above.my thoughts were 30.9.5 x15 would be just right but would look silly.... Got a set of 35 simex but they would be no fun at 180 kph on the metal ,and would rob alot of power . So was leaning towards 31.10.5x 15 .open to your thoughts

Most of the winch guys that run 35-36" for winch comps tend to run 33" for off road racing

Given that we only completed two laps I wont give any personal advice other than a bigger rolling diameter would have been nice (we were running 32x9.5s). Klem ran on his 35" simex.
Are you honestly expecting to do 180kph? I might be a shit driver and we only had a standard Holden V6 but doubt we got bugger all over 100.
When I do it again I would like to run a 35" muddy.
(All this assumes you are running some type of class 4 or 6 type truck).
Good luck, which ever way you go.

I am no expert, but I would assume a radial is a shiteload better at high speed than a bias ply tyre

What is your final drive, what tyres are you looking at and how many revolutions do they do per kilometre, what top speed to you want to do to much HP and Torque do you have and at what revs. Mate you are getting into so much science here I need a whole lot more info
Re: What size tyres do i run for taupo 100
We got to well over 160 on a number of the straights last time, and the owner of the truck found 200 on occasion. ( I wasn't that keen in someone elses truck). And yep sound like this years track will be faster in places, with good traction required to power out of bends.
As DrPC says tire size is more related to your vehicle and its power, etc. What size will it pull strongly out of a tight bend, but still hold a reasonable top end, its all a juggling act. Also whats it weigh, narrow tyres will cut through the gravel better, but wider may suit your style/suspension.
No help really but your truck and you need to know it and make a call based on that, but I would suggest 30s are a touch small.

Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

Im no scientist , the 35" simex rob to much power out of the 3.5 rover v8 but now we 4.4 more torque around 100 more hp now .tryed some 30.9.5x15 and it revs faster and tops out speed wise at 160.on the flat with the 3.5v8.so thats why i thought some AT 31.10.5 not too aggresive tread .i think if i go any bigger than 31" it my slow me down out of the coners and there's plenty of them .

Thats why my gut felling is 31" AT radial as its a real compramise when u try and set ur truck up for diffrent jobs...
Re: What size tyres do i run for taupo 100
When Darryn Bell was competing in his 5.0 litre RR he used 235x85x16 tyres which are 32".
Pretty sure he was still standard diff ratios too (3.5's)

Don't know if its relevant but I read about someone who had run AT's and blown a few tyres. They said they would run MT's next time for the higher load rating/stronger sidewall. This was not specifically about Taupo.
Just a thought.

Re: What size tyres do i run for taupo 100
Not sure of the track conditions up in Taupo. However I find I get way more traction out of my 32 x 11.5" Simex ET's on some of our long winding back country gravel roads down here. Like up beyond Lake Coleridge etc, if you are familiar with that Dr Love Glove. Similarly loose, to the Lake Tekapo Rd up to the McCauley, but a lot narrower and more windy and banked.
Anyways, as you know my normal tyres are Kumho KL-71s, an MT, in 31 x 10.5". They don't cut in nearly as much as the ET. With the ET Simex, I can even put a wheel up on top of the graded up windrow quite confidently. Would not be doing that in a near square SWB, with the Kumho MT's, nor the same sized BFG MT's that I ran previously.
I am used to rallying, gravel hill climbs etc, and push my Prado quite hard. Being a SWB, it is always in 4wd whenever on gravel, ( it does not drift very well, snapping back due to being a wide-track shorty) and if I can see the road is clear ahead, I happily sit on 140 kmh in the loose with the Simex's on.
My advice is forget the AT's and go with a more open treaded tyre with BIG lugs.
You will see on the day that my two mates from down here who run Class 8's will be running MT's that have been hand-cut to Buggery. This is because they are sponsored by Tyre companies who do not offer a ET type tyre.
