Still cant understand why its taken so long ....They have said with regard to both chop shops they were feeding the export market for parts.Seems a no brainer to me to look at engine numbers etc when they go thru customs on way out of country. The thieves come to you ....so simple.

I don't think it's as easy as that.
A mate in Nelson used to wreck cars (not stolen ones as far as I know) and fill container after container to the brim with just say, axles. Another with engines etc.
Unless they unpack the entire container and repack it again (which would be a major mission) they can easily get away with stolen parts I'd say. Well, in fact, as they have pointed out, they do.. So yeah.

another big problem is with imported vehicles, often the dealers that were bringing them in were too tired to look for the engine serial when registering them and just put "unknown" so you're no further ahead. (example:

Unless you've jotted down your engine number. build sheets often aren't any help either.

I know where this guy is and he also has a small baling contracting firm which will be unnamed, but has always had a name in the area for being dodgy but cops have never done anything about it
good to see there still hitting them

Maybe all this police activity will make it too hard to continue chopping rides. Although I would guess after the heat drops they will start again.
Perhaps a continued series of inspections at irregular intervals might help. If only they had done this sooner, maybe some rides might still be in the hands of their owners and not in containers bound for the rest of the world. How many containers did these guys (all of them) ship out? Makes the small amount of recovered/identified stolen parts/wrecks seem miniscule.

Seems the scrappies are still not checking the details properly.
