TD05 16G Turbo for Safari - Small vs Big Differences

Hi
Looking at turboing my td42 safari in the near future, have done a fair bit of research on the topic and seems the best turbo is a td05 off an evo. I dont want to be modifying the pump, so will stick to the 16G, however research has told me these come in 2 sizes, and the smaller size will suit the td42 better. I have found 2 turbos on trademe at a reasonable price, however they dont mention the size (or maybe they do in the part numbers - im not sure), how to I tell if its the one im after?

I had a quick google, sounds like up to evo 2 had a smaller compressor wheel - quicker on boost 60 compared to 68mm on the evo 3 up. Seems that 16G-9 (1st one)is 9cm sq on the inlet side, so the earlier code may be 16G-7 and later ones up to 10.5ish (area = pie r sq etc). If all else fails call a turbo shop or an evo wrecker

id stay away from the second one unless you want to get it fixed. in the second pic you can see some good chips in one of the compressor blades.
afaik the 16g small has a 7cm2 nozzle. Well the Subaru tdo5s' do and is (from experience) the one to go for. Without boost comp the big 16g would cause lots of off boost smoke and be really laggy.
Also would strongly recommend you put a rebuild kit in it. try and get the one with the superback kit. makes them more reliable if your running around the 10-15psi mark. And why wouldn't you? The difference between standard boost and the low teens is quite noticeable

not certain but have seen(think on the aussie site) the split pulse exhaust housing dosen"t work to well on safaris?

OK thanks for the input ill forget about those ones then. Looks like search just got a whole lot harder... havnt seen ANY 16g early evo turbos, the were all the larger 20g, and never come across vr4 td05s. Im guessing these are found on the early 'evo zero' vr4s?
I was advised to steer clear from the subaru td05s as they were considered unreliable at 15psi... any merit in this or just someone with a brand preference?
Had a search on the 'superback kit', pretty green when it comes to turbos, mind explaining what im looking for? I understand its a type of compressor wheel, but how to I know if it is/isnt?
Was gonna be a cheapo (im a uni student after all) and run the turbo as is for a while, i know it would def be good to rebuild it but finding one with little/no shaft play and running an intercooler should be fine for the time being? Or is it still a big no no

basically the superback kit is made to take out the flex caused by the higher boost levels in the turbine shaft. This is what causes them to fail.
Thing to note is that the Subarus use the mitsi tdo5 core and just have different housings and turbine and compressor wheels.
IF you get one that is in "good order" ie no in out movement and minimal up/down movement the you SHOULD be ok. but only if you keep the boost levels down. Remember if you take the risk and it doesn't last then you really run the risk if stuffing the turbo well and truly. Learnt that the hard way. Twice

anyone running a gt2860 disco potato turbo? couple on tm at the moment and they are also ment to match the td42 quite well... not much luck tracking a complete small td05 down. only prob with the gt2860 is have to use adaptor between manifold and turbo
