Hey, apologies if this has been discussed to death,

Im looking for a Diesel ute,

I have driven a few D4D hiluxes but in my price range they are very rattely (my old 88 toyoace with 300+ km sounded like a kitten compared with these D4D's with 200 km)
So Im really put off them because of the high cost of injector repair.

It seems like the YD25 navara is not very reliable either, I rang Nissan wrecker to see how much a second hand yd25 and he laughed at me and said if they get one they crate it up and send it over seas because they are worth gold.

So now Im looking at 2006 Rodeo with the Izuzu diesel.

Wanting to use it for yard work, DIY and towing/launching the boat.

I dont care too much about horse power, and I dont need it to ride like a car, I want reliable and economical if thats possible?

Any opinions on the Rodeo?

you may want to elaborate more,
like an indicative price range 2wd/4wd single or double or inbetween cab.
the inlaws ran a heap of those rodeos in there fleet and they're not bad but I do have a mate with a d21/22 navara that makes them all look sick,
it runs a factory qd32 with a td27 turbo and manifold and intake ,
it's had a little tweak on the pump and makes a lot of newer utes look silly,
obviously not as comfy as the new stx 550 but damn practical whilst being a real sleeper in the power stakes

Colorados are a pretty good truck

I have a 08 ranger auto, absolutly love it, for me it was between a ranger or colorado and i couldnt find a auto in my price range with colorado.

Have a few mates with both and are all love them

Mates with hilux spend a fear bit of money on injecotrs and electrical issues

Thanks for your reply, I'd like to keep it under 20 thousand....im in two minds really, buy a nice one, or scale back and buy a "hack", plenty of TD27 Navara's on trademe and apparently as reliable as the sunrise.

Definately need a doublecab for packing away kids in the back. I'd go 4wd if it has the same economy as the 2wd, but that seems like it might be a bit hopefull. Really hard to find any fuel consumption figures between the two.

Yeah, I though it was all internet scare mongering till I drove some, In my time in the trade, as a motor mechanic, any engine making noises that that was not long for this world!

My old man has a dx navara and had a good run, hes put manual hubs on it to make it better on fuel and less wear etc
Not sure what returns he gets on fuel but the ranger auto with 31s i get 600km to about 80buks of diesel

Thats sounds okay. About what you'd expect ay?
I notice there is a v6 petrol 2003 rodeo on trademe, reckons about 9 l/100 , but the reviews say more like 13 l/100. Its looks like a nice ute though.

After a shit ton of internet searching and looking through trademe I made a desicion and bought a 4D56 2008 Triton.
Its done 150,000 kays.

Was going to change engine oil and filter this weekend, any other suggestions for maintenance?

This is my first common rail diesel.

If there are any common modifications to improve engine reliability or economy I'd be grateful for advice on that as well.

I've heard of people installing a 2nd fuel filter after the main one with the water alarm in it to give you more time to kill the motor if it detects water.
Not sure on EGR block mods for those motors but are pretty common for the Nissan diesels.
Another recent thread on here is to install a water/methanol injection system to cool EGR temp etc. A pyrometer helps detect engine problems before they get out of hand.

Thanks for your reply, i found the exhaust gas temp measuring kit in the JCAR catalogue so ill build that and install it. Good idea on the fuel filter, do you have to bleed the fuel system on common rail? Is there just1 filter or a bypass filter as well? Lots to learn
