Offroad-Express

The date of 23 November has been set with the Department of Conservation for a cut back of the vegetation along the southern end of the 42nd Traverse in the Tongariro Forest.

While the main effort will be on the Saturday 23rd, if conditions allow, more work will be done over the Sunday morning. The Park Hotel Ruapehu are offering a discount to those assisting the work effort.

Chainsaws may only be used by people with recognised certificates.

Operators of other machines like hedge cutters, brush cutters etc do not need qualifications. Not everyone needs to cut stuff... clearing it off the track is a big job too.

I've mtb'd this a couple of times, keen to drive it and earn some karma points by doing my bit on the clearing.

Either coming along with someone else or dragging my Delica down?

I plan on coming to this with a few other Air Force lads from Ohakea.

Went through the 42 Traverse earlier on in the year so know what to expect.

Unfortunately I won't have my chainsaw certificate in time which is a bugger.

A reminder of this activity and a note to advise there is plenty of work to do and not a lot of four wheelers offering!
It's all very well talking about keeping our tracks available and about 'partnerships' with DoC to expand the opportunities... but unless people front up to maintain these places, it's like peeing into the wind.

I've had a couple of things crop up this weekend which means I won't be able to help out with this as it'll take up a bit too much time travelling.

Apologies for this. I was really looking forward to a trip away.

Same Day ...... And a very important issue....

A turnout of 20 volunteers on the Sat cut back over 2km of track and a small group on Sun cut a further 800m.

DoC were in the process of running a digger through to clear drains and address small slips etc... however the operator was instructed by DoC to stop as there was no funding to continue. At that point it was over halfway, so the operator was going to continue and try to fix what he could on the way out.

It looks like it will be up to four wheeling to monitor track wear and if needed, do repairs where possible.

Clean green NZ, yeah Right

What was the track like? Have heard it is a bit greasy? It is pissing down in Ohakune ATM so probably around there too. Was thinking of going tommorrow.
