I was driving along in 5th, and tried to shift down to 4th and it wouldn't go in.

I couldn't put it into anything except 5th again. So I came to a stop and it let me into 1st, and while I could shift up, I could never shift back down, then I became harder to even be shifting up.
It sounds like it is grinding slightly as I shift into gears now.

From what I've been told this sounds like a desynchro problem and I need to replace the whole gearbox?

Can anyone confirm this and also give me details on the gearbox I require to replace it with?

checked your gearbox oil ?

also check your clutch slave/master cylinders as they may be leaking , that will cause it to be hard to change gears and grind as you said

This might be one of the under filled terrano gearbox problems. Do a search on here for the correct procedure to fill one of these gearboxes, it takes something like 5l poured in from the gear lever, or something like that.

Also, Sounds as if maybe your box was filled with API grade GL-5 or GL-6 oil which is more common. This fluid will eat soft metals such as brass in your syncros. You must use GL-4, look it up. A lot of service people choose to ignore this, along with the fluid level issue.

These are the 2 main reasons people refer to this gearbox as 'weak as piss.'

had a knowledgeable mate look at it and turns out the Slave cylinder needed bleeding.

And how did you help out other than telling a guy with a manual gearbox how to put oil in an auto,and just post whoring another thread.

So, just an update... and could be keen to hear thoughts if anyone has any other ideas.

We bled the slave and topped up the clutch fluid and now the truck seems to be stuck in gear?

in Neutral it drives forward, even in reverse it drives forwards. It can be put into gear but it is very very hard to get it in. (note that even though the stick may be in, it always seems to be driving forward at the same rate no matter where the stick is.)

I ordered a new slave which we will put in as my mate believes this to be the problem. The master does not look too old and may have been replaced more recently.

Have you pulled the gear selector out of the top of the box?
It sounds like its stuck in gear and the selector fork may have come off the shaft?

It's stuck in what ever gear it was in when the Selector fell to pieces.
as above. pull out the gear stick...remove the trim and the rubber boot(you will need circlip pliers).

Straight up just remove the stick covers and pull the gear stick up? Then what? stick it back in?

The gear stick is still moving fine and I can put it in and out of gears.

then undo the four bolts holding part number 30 in place. you'll be able to see the linkages.

Hey guys, back again.

I never did look into the linkages as we replaced the slave cylinder and it is almost back to what it was - driving normally when in gear.

However it still has problems going into some gears. It can go in but sometimes feels blocked or is just harder to put in. My friend suggested that the selector forks my be bent? any thoughts on this?

We checked the fluids and it although it wasn't completely full, it wasn't low and surely should not be low enough to be any problem...

Unfortunately I'm selling it either way as I need the money to pay for my flights overseas. Bit of a bummer as I need to sell it fast in order to book my flights but a small problem like this tends to ward people off!
