Rear diff lokka is in and working FINALLY
For anyone else out there considering putting in a lokka it is pretty easy to do (in a rear semi-floating FJ40 diff). Just have to be very carefull and ensure you get the distances between the axel spacers - cross shaft and between the cam gears spot on - the tollarance for deviation is REALLY small.
Took it down into the paddock and dropped the hammer just to make sure both rear wheels were spinning - they were - spining in first and in second and in third gear
Power steer is next - those big tyres in the mud can get pretty heavy after a while.

Replaced both the inner and outer CV boots on both sides of the Terrano today, just on 5 hrs work.
A huge thanks goes to Elmo for his help.
Everything went rather smoothly, except for the crappy brand new greasgun not working. Had to get split ring remover for the toolbox too, first one was shit, but the second one did the job.
Next time it will be manual hubs.

Think I can handle that.

Yeah if you buy a new one it`ll come with instructions - my advice is to read them

like I didn`t to start with

. You`ll need a feeler gauge (thing you check spark plug gaps with) and make sure you pay attention to the bit that says "... this gap must be 0.150" - 0.170"...". I had to pay $60 to get two thrust washers shimmed by 0.015" each (only cost $16 to buy new but Toyota didn`t make the size I needed anymore)

but once they were done it all came togeather sweet

m8 had a stuborn ball joint so i bought a balljoint seperator from repco and a lower susp ball joint i needed. worked a charm, much easier than bashing the hell out of the casing and only $30, wish if bought it a couple of years ago. after that, study. will be studying all day everyday till the 8th of novemer for exams, am about to stop now and go to bed. without this site for an odd study break every now and again id go mad! everybody keep writing interesting stuff for me to read and procrastinate!!!
cheers Pete

Watched Wopass do both front CV's in his Missile. gave helpful advice, as you do in these circumstances!!
Got repaid in full and in kind when I had to take both Air operated Front hub locks to bits and reassemble as permanently in so I could continue to play.
back to the Dealership tomorrow, to claim under warranty.

Did Ball Joint flip on the Isuzu, tryed some 33's on the front to check clearance, found that above, in front and behind are all fine but on hard lock there is big rubbing.
Now need to sort out better offset rims than the ones I have and it will work
Did a rece trip on Banks Peninsula as per this report.
TRIP REPORT LINK
Built this edging for the new vege garden, now need some top soil, but not keen to pay about $150.00 for what I need from a comercial place (that would finish my snorkel project!!!).
Then went for a play at the Waimack to at least get some mud on the oudside of the truck.
Cant go without mud therapy

Not to throw a damper on things, but if its having these problems at 30,000k's, I wonder what its going to be like after 130,000k's when the warranty has run out

Wonder if the do-nuts helped the diff along?
Well, Db, if it's a lemondog, I will have a dmaned good engine and trans to put in the project Series 3!!!!! (be a bloody expensive engine and trans tho) Lets keep our fangers crossed, ok?
Thanks fer your help and advice and tools anent the hubs too.
When and where do we go again??????????

Posted: Tue Oct 24, 2006 2:05 pm

as far as the hubs go, I went to the AVM site, and read up on them.
manufacturors state that complete dis- and re- assembly with cleaning etc every 30K to maintain reliable operating etc.
Oftener if in dirty and wet conditions.
Well, its in thois constantly so I guess that its running tru to AVM specs!!
If this is a regualr and recurring prob, I will fit manual hubs or bully the agent into doing it!!!!
As far as the diff is concerned, a seal blowing (ask Nanook of the North about this) can happen at any time. No hardware was sucked it YET. so I aint too worried right now.
