Hi

I am looking for somebody reliable in Auckland to service my 4x4 trailer that I brought over from South Africa.

I took it to a "normal" trailer place, but I think they have mucked up the braking system.

Also needing electrics on it looked at?

Any advice appreciated.

is there such thing as a "trailer centre" in nz ?
any half decent mechanic should be able to sort the trailer out.

Got some nice photos.

It has a run in braking system with auto reverse, but when it was serviced I think they put to much grease in the mechanism, so now the moment you reverse the piston pushes back against the bar that actuates the brakes, basically meaning you cannot reverse.

I don't think they are supposed to have grease in as it then has enough friction to allow reversing, but if you break while travelling there is enough momentum to push the piston back.

looks like normal override brakes.
they are meant to be greased otherwise they wear out.
sounds like either the solenoid isn't working or the brake adjustment is a little tight.
get someone to put it into reverse and you should hear/feal the solenoid click in.

Its a completely mechanical setup.

As the car reverses, the cup part, which is attached to a rod pushes backwards through the A frame. There is a lever which it pushes against, as the lever is pushed backwards it pulls the same cable as is attached to the hand brake, activating the brakes.

Will try and take some close ups tomorrow and post.

Is it a set up similar to this, if so there is a lever to lock out the brakes so you can reverse?

Yes, is similar, but has never had lockout latch.

sounds like cable operated brakes instead of hydraulic.
so how does it stop the brakes from working to be able to reverse?

my guess here is the lock out is missing and it never had an auto lockout system in it. not sure how you could even make one for mechanical brakes.
