Toyota 5L how much boost?

Post by Petemcc »

I now have the turbo on my truck and it is going way better!

I have a modified ct20 with a 16g compressor wheel. My boost gauge should turn up tomorrow but looking at the 5mm spacer on the waste gate I would guess that it is running about 15 psi.

Exhaust is 3 inch

have not yet touched the fuel (was smoking a bit before the turbo) and EGTs have not been over 400 (probe is a little short, new one coming with the boost gauge so might go up a little)

The motor is old 350000+km but goes well and uses no oil.

I am not too worried about buggering rings etc but don't want to put so much stress on it to risk running bearings at this stage.

When adjusting boost and fuel to a level, more fuel = more heat more boost = less heat (until turbo gets inefficient) but more power = more stress on engine.

How much is too much. Was thinking 10psi with fuel adjusted so that EGTs don't go over 550 would be a good balance.

If I am at this stage and putting more boost in makes it run colder is that good or bad? Can you run too much boost?

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Pete

are you running a boost compensater from a 2.4 Hilux on your fuel pump? I do remember reading somewhere that with out one 7psi is a good max due to the over fueling you get when your off the boost which makes the heat can't quite remember where I read that though.

my 5L had a bigger hybrid turbo and a water to air intercooler and everyday driving it was running 15psi and with meth injection upto 35psi

Toyota recommend no more than 7lbs because a 5L is only a 3L bored out with the small bearings.

which ct20 do you have?

as far as boost goes my 2.8 doesn't really go untill 10psi.
with stock diesel ct20 12psi without intercooler and around 15psi if intercooled.
but with modded turbo who knows. only limit is how hot the intake air gets.
