Kiwi Challenge 06
Few pics of the event so far. A lot wetter than last year, and tougher, quiet a few winch failures so far, even the pto winches are breaking, one roll over and one fire. As of about midday today, Sam Baddeley and Huddy were leading followed by Bruce Hughes and then Roger McKay.

The truck that had the fire under the bonnet was Graham Kerns from North Shore. Lexus powered Hilux etc. I think they're been able to re-wire it...they also rolled on Sunday after their winch rope broke on the fairlead.
Klem had some problems yesterday with electrical issues. Pit crew work overtime as usual and was going again as of last night.
Donald Preston and Grant Castle are they only ones that I know for sure that have pulled out altogether.
Grant Guy busted a winch and were looking at getting aprts down from Auckland today.
Bruce Hughes damaged a diff, but were able to repair and keep going.
Sam Baddeley blew PTO winch in a stage and finished by using rear mounted elec winch and reverse winch the remaining hazard....winch was replaced and is going strong.
Steve McConnell had auto trans problems before he even started.
Steve Reid and Kev/Troy both blew PTO winches.

Wayne had a shitter on Sunday on the Rock Garden stage and broke steering box at the same point he broke his diff last year. They had some other probs too and decide to for-go the night stage on Sunday to sort their issues. Went well yesterday, but broke LH CV/axle so DNF'd one stage.
Nig and Ben doing well....no DNF's as far as I know. Both working really well...Nig driving smart and looking after the truck, Ben running like a trooper and making good winching calls.
Last night's Night Stage was cancelled, so hopefully things are better for all today.

hey jungle, many thanks to you and your merry band of helpers, without you guys we wouldnt have a comp, sweet job dude!
its a bit strange that after deciding to call it quits then grant and i giving bruce a hand to swap diffs over and keep him going that he ends up behind us??? whoo weve made it off the bottom of the table!!
ah ya gotta laugh about it, someones gotta keep the fun in these things ay?
clear ya calanders cause the norwest events gonna be full of sunshine, hard yakka, good company and plenty of prizes! Bring it on!!!

Another fun event, cheers to Sooty, George & the team for a great effort.
All our mods since the Rotorua challenge worked well. A few minor changes should get our winch working much more reliably for the next one. We might even have time for some testing beforehand!
Cheers

If it doesn't break, drive it harder.

Leading up to the comp we removed the hilux diffs and fitted GQ nissan front and rear diffs and coils , this was done because at the last comp in Rotarua we blow front and rear diffs cvs and diff lock and LSDs . We didn't have any trouble with the winch , pto or the high mount (only operator trouble

Ps The supper charger is pumping 10 lbs and going hard on standard 1UZ
and pulls harder then a school boy . Man toyota make one strong v8
Cheers Klem
Thanks again to all that helped out.
Re protest,We were told it was Nigel Reid,As a competitor there i did not have a problem with the protest only When it was made,It seams to me that if it had been done after the prolog then Bruce would of had time to do something about it ,But to leave it to the last day SUCKS,To be honest if you were to be picky you could go over proberly 90% of the trucks mine included and find something wrong.Cheers..Steve
Made it home ok, top event bar a few technicalities..... Thanks to Jungle as head of the marshalls, we knew what we had to do.
A couple of the stages were real tough - Stage 3 took two days to get 17 vehicles through. 5 made it within the 40min DNF.
It was here there was a few breakages, Klem's 2 winch's & tyre, Grant Guy's CV & damaged the hydralic winch, Wayne Lovejoy - broke the steering box output shaft, Ranna did a CV & PTO winch. The big water hole at the start put the Rangie into limp mode - It would idle but no more and so slowly PTO winched out at idle. Once clear it was away.
Further to the disqualification - Bruce has two sets of beadlocked rims. When certifying you must get the largest rims certified as far as i'm aware. Bruce had a smaller set of rims on the vehicle than the ones certified for the vehicle at the time of the competition so what was on the plate did not match what was on the vehicle.
Thanks for the hospitality guys, mostly a bunch of neat people, great to have the ozzies there to make sure there was a roaring fire at nights, seen some neat machines, the whine of the Klem's supercharger, the speed of Bruce's PTO and Steve's hydralic winch's, and the shear sound of the TVR powered Rangie wil be missed.
Cheers to all, Glen
