Howdy Folks

Post by Scruffy »

Gidday people.

I'm Pete, live in Putaruru, I'm a heavy transport mechanic/Diesel Mechanic by trade & own Putaruru Diesel Services Ltd.
We work on pretty much anything, do a lot of work on 4WD's, from routine maintenance to rebuilding Engines, Gearboxes, Diffs etc. Also do a bit of modification & a few upgrades as well. I'm always happy to lend a hand or if I can, add an extra brain to the mix, so if needed, feel free to send me a message, or give me a call here at the workshop, 07 883 7299.

Vehicle wise, I've got a bit of a rare toy, 96 factory manual Terrano, with front & rear LSD from standard, TD27 ETI. Doing a few bits and pieces to it as we go along.
Also got an STX Navara, but that belongs to the workshop so I'm not allowed to play with it according to the boss/mrs.

I'm a bit of a Nissan fanatic, but in saying that I'm not a biased prick either.

Anyways, I'll be around having a look.

Cheers.

Yea its certainly a bit different, I expected it to be all open. The rear lsd is the typical R50, LSD till it feels like it, then pisses around, but the front is R200, and bites in pretty solid, both in every time. Only good photo I've got of it isn't on the computer, and its got the boat on.

Just in the process of sorting this Safari diff out for it, so it will have 4 wheel disc brakes, and a stronger lsd, but I'll be changing ratio, so I'll be changing the front diff as well, another LSD r200 out of a skyline in 4.1 ratio will sort it, will keep the spec right.

Pete why the safari diff? seems like alot of hassle for what you could fix with a arb locker? Im asuming you can get a locker for the origional diff.

Not so much for the traction issue, I'm mainly after the disc brakes, the lsd came with it, same diff housing as mine, same width, just need to cut and re-weld the spring perches, torsion mounts and shock mounts. Which I could also turn into lifting it at the same time..... I've already got some designs for the front to lift the body off the subframe, hardest part to it is lifting the engine with the body and leaving the rest of it behind, just need taller engine mounts, which I'm in the process of making at work.

Whoohoo, so nice to hear of another Nissan (Ranno) nut with modding ideas and theories to boot.
Welcome to the site.

You will have opened a few eyes with your twin LSD setup, something most of us would love to have.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Yea its certainly good in sand towing the boat out of the water, and at times towing other vehicles out trying to do the same thing, makes it a lot easier with 4 wheels under load.

I'll be putting photos up of the build of this diff setup as I go along, and the same when I do the front one, which hopefully all going to plan won't be far along, due to ratio I'll have to do them both at the same time.

Trucked - tried to open that link, but no go. I've heard about a few people doing the MR2 conversion, it could be worth looking into.

Nice, I didnt realise they had drum rear.

I was reading as the years went on, Nissan clutch LSDs got weaker and weaker (cost reasons). They didnt change the design or housing, they just left out the expensive friction plates. By the early 2000s they were just stuffing spacers in:

So people can add more clutches to restore function pretty safely.

I notice that the Safari H233B rear LSD center is slightly different to the R50 but they are both 33-spline. Saf. LSD has 4-tabs on the clutches whereas R50 has 2-tabs. The 1980s/early 90s Saf. LSDs seem to work exceptionally well without modification.

I'll start a build thread soon on getting it done
