Rover V8 dizzy identification

Post by mike »

I've got a slight problem, went to hook the engine up and discovered I have what it looks like is electronic ignition in a 78 rover v8 out of a range rover. When I took this engine out I didnt see an external module for the distributor. The dizzy has 3 wires coming out of it to a plug. If i remember correctly the plug just plugged into the wiring loom which I didnt bother to trace

Here is a pic of the insides.

and this is a link to the bigger version http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/modules.php?set_albumName=album96&id=DSCF2045&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php

I'm either missing a module (which i suspect) or the module is in there (tiny black thing) and just needs the correct wiring. I can't find any wiring diargrams and the library didnt have one rangerover book

Can anyone assist with my dizzy problem please :D

Cheers

Yep

That is a lumenition modified lucas dizzy. The little black thing is the light sensor, and the star wheel thing is the chopper that breaks the beam & fires off the coil.

You need the separate module to make it work, or else convert it back to standard points ignition. The standard ignition has only one lead that goes from the points to the coil.

The main weak points in a fido V8 are cam lobes worn, blocked breathers with oil pumping out the front and rear mains or any other orifice and severe dissy wear in both the body and on the lobes giving erratic dwell and spark. The luminition fixs the lobes but if the body is bad or for a real spark you fit an HEI unit from a GM sister. Better starting, cleaner burning and no fuel fouling

bugger I remember that one which I thought was just a headlight whats-ya-ma-call-it. I'll have to have a good hunt in the garage and see if i did take it off otherwise looks like ill be converting it back to points grrr. How hard/expensive is this to do by the way? what are the chances of getting another one of these bits im missing you think? thanks for the replies guys, makes things a little clearer
