Safari Rear Wheel Bearings

Post by Scruffy »

Gidday folks, I've had a search all over the web, & all over ORE, havn't found what I'm after.

Removing the wheelbearings, is there a slimy wee trick to these, or are they just like the hilux axle bearings and they can be absolute a$$holes to get the shaft out? I've got the axle out & up on the bench, just trying to get the axle itself out of the bearing, I'm guessing they must be pressed into place? Locking nut is off etc, the wee shim/locking tab plate is out.

Joys of being a truck mechanic tells me get the big hammer out and stick the whole thing in the press, but I just want to make sure I havn't missed anything obvious, before I go and destroy the lot

If their anything like hilux bearings that are recessed into the backing plate and the top of the bearing sits flush with the top of the backing plate , then you'll need to smash the bearing cages out and use a die grinder or similar to grind a notch into the inner and outer races so u can pop the ball bearings out then should b able to get the shaft free of the backing plate and cut the inner race off the shaft :) - have fun their a prick.
