TD27T charging issues

Post by marrco »

I have a 1990 TD27T and over the last few days the battery has slowly lost it's charge, the battery is only about a year old and it charges up fine on a mains charger, the alternator was replaced with a new one about 6-7 years ago.

The issue I'm having is the battery light in the dash does not come on when the ignition is turned on and stays off when running, I've checked the bulb and it's all good, I've checked the voltage across the battery when running and when not and the voltage stays the same which suggests the alternator is not charging but at the same time the battery light is off.

Done a bit of a search on here but can't find anything useful, I'll be taking the alternator to a sparky tomorrow to get checked, also checked all fuses etc but everything is fine, this one has me a bit stumped, can anyone here shead any light on this, if so it would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

once i had an issue similar to this with a TD27T and it turned out the plug (rectangle from memory) at the back was not quite pushed "home" properly. I know it's a long shot, but just check.

failing the plug on the back of the alternator get a multi meter and put accross the battery terminals whilst the engine is running the gentley tap the alternator with a hammer(gently) been 6-7 years it may have stuck brushes.

Most likely the regulator is "smoked" if the light isn't working with the engine not running and the key on. Often the cause is the rectifying diodes have shorted stressing the regulator. Search around for a new one as the shaft might be worn where the oil seal is from the vacuum pump.

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
