Transfer case

hi all, the transfer case in my Pathfinder, z24/71c is making some noise, has been for quite a while. I have one here from a QD32, are the splines the same? And would this one have the bigger chain? (I've heard some have bigger chains)

What transmission is it from? If it was from an FS5R30A 5-spd manual, then it will probably have the larger Safari chain. Mine did, but you know Nissan, sometimes they did weird things. Split it open to be 100%

Re spline count, they are both the same TX-10 so in theory should be the same. However, I think they went to a larger spline count when they went to a larger chain.

Kbjj has played around with compatibility, seems the V6 units are different spline count.

You can check chain width thru the drain bung using a piece of wire with a wee hook on the end. Wide one is about 47mm, narrow is about 36mm. I think it was a V6 thing in the WD21's that had the stronger chain, not quite as strong as the Safari chain, but interchangable. Talking WD21's, the auto xfer case has a larger input spline then the manuel. I'm not sure about the FS5R30A's. Hope this helps, and let us know what you find

Actually thats probably the case w/ the FS5R30A too... It would make sense that the Safari TX12 transfer would have a stronger chain, but still compatible with the R30A gearbox, since they used the R30A gearbox in both the V6 manual WD21s and RD28 Safari.

A theory I have been thinking: the TX12 transfer from a wrecked Safari RD28 manual should bolt straight on to the R30A TD27 gearbox. Which would mean passenger side drop for SAS. I'd really like to test this theory

Do you mean drivers side drop :?

I have a "hybrid" box that came from a RD28 Safari (or so I have been told) or maybe a small petrol engined Safari with the same bell housing as the TD or QD. The ratios have been replaced with YD25 ones to suit the next project. Best part is that being a Safari transfer, the front drive is on the right side for a possible SAS conversion :wink:

I just want to know for sure if the Safari transfer can be bolted to the R30A gearbox, that would open some doors alright

From what I can figure, the rear half of the safari box would have to be used on the r30a box. But it would be sweet if transfer just bolted straight on! And presumably the auto and manual tx12 transfers would be the same? (excepting the spline count). So in this case a auto tx12 could be stripped, r30a spline fitted, then have it bolt straight up. Oh to have a wrecking yard so I could experiment..

Oh, and just out of interest, anyone know if all the nissan tx10 transfer boxes have the same gear reduction ratio?

I did a wee bit of digging around a while back and couldn't find any indication of different factory ratio's for the tx10. Calmini I think, now have the reduction gear kit for them, pricey thou

I reckon between us we could build a mega SAS WD21 using all Nissan drivetrain.

That's the plan but I work best on my own :lol: :lol:
Besides, I can't bring myself to put other manufacturers components in and loose the Nissan reliability :P

Problem with gts4/gtr box is no reduction (low range). But sure would be interesting to see if it could be added inside (swap over from tx10)

Just gave me an idea.

It should as the RB30 powered nissan patrol gearbox had the same internals as the BNR32.

there thinking at the time was to use the patrol internals as it was the strongest thing nissanhad at the time to handle the power, they just redesigned the gearbox casing itself to fit the new platform and to make it lighter.

Hey Siba, why go for yd25 gears? Are they a lower ratio set?
And are you going to use safari driveshaft? (I presume cardan drum makes it not slip yoke compatible?)

Yd 25 so i can run 4.6's. Safari rear shaft onto Terrano rear diff. Ditch the transfer hand brake. Still in the planning process but have a few good ideas. Still saving for the big ticket items before starting to build (engine, clutch, ARB diff locks and drive train). My thoughts are to get a gearbox and build a truck around it :lol:
It will be ALL Nissan though.
