FJ40 TIMING

Post by parker »

Hi All I am trying to do the timing on my 40 I have the rotor pointing at where the number 1 spark plug wire hits the distributer so towards spark plug number 4. However I can't find either the TDC line or the BB in the window.

I can get it to start and run ....... It runs reasonably well. Is it likely that the timing is so far out that the TDC line and the BB are out side the window ??

The flywheel has the marks on it but there not lines there holes, Theres two from memory. Maybe turn it over by hand to start with so you can see the holes then put twink on them so when you put the timing light on it you can see them better.

Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Cheers for that ... At least now I will be searching for the correct thing. How far out could it be to still run ???

The old 2F will run even if it's a long way out - 20deg or more... Also check there's not too much play in the distributor shaft - that can allow it to continually change but will be obvious with the timing light once you find the TDC marks. It was a few years back, but I think mine had an indent dot at TDC, and another line in the flywheel to mark the correct timing advance - so don't get confused...

It's worth adjusting the tappets too - they don't have hardened valve seats, so they do need adjusting occasionally...

Is hard to see the mark even when you know what you are looking for...

Originally had my dizzy set up completely wrong and the 2F still ran...
