Safari Rust! Places to go!

Post by Forged »

Hey guys

I have just bought a safari GQ SWB 1992 and it has light rust in both side roof rails

and substantial rust in the rear roof rail and it has lifted the outside steal

I went into whangarei today to see the Murray Tonks he has done some work for my bike before and he seemed very good.

he quoted me $1800 just for the rear rail work, my question is does anyone know/recommend a place that does very good work and a cheaper price? dont mind traveling to Auckland

Theres a guy I saw when I was in auckland that has about 15 of them in his yard and was doing this repair to a few of them.

Hes a member on here too but I cant remember his contact details.

If you know safaris youl no that the only way to fix the roof rust is to remove the whole roof and sills and replace them , the roof sills and main body are 3 different parts and the electrolosis happens between the layers , I just did up another body with minimal rust but once you pull the roof skins of you will see where the problems lie , a brand new roof was 1250 from nissan (cant remember if that was plus or inc , and including folding the gutters you could do it in a day easily so should be under 2k do to the job properly , if you just patch it , it will rust out again in a matter of time

thanks for your advice, so to replace the whole top skin would be around 2k all up would that include paint?

Also do you know a place which i could get the work done with good workmanship and not too expensive? do you do it yourself? as I dont mind traveling to get it done.

My neigbor works offshore but use to own a panel shop !
Any reputable panel beater would be fine !
