After reading big's posts on GL5 oil I thought it would be best to check what I got from repro. Turns out I picked up some 80-90 GL5 Repco branded oil and as of a month ago have it in my gear box transfer cases and diffs.
Should I change it? Does anyone know if the repco branded stuff is ok for bronze/brass? Does my hilux box have bronze/brass in it? I would have thought it would...
Cheers,
Pete
hilux gear box oil gl4 or gl5
Re: hilux gear box oil gl4 or gl5
Hi Pete, change it in your gearbox as from what I heard they have brass or bronze parts unless it's designed to take GL5 and otherwise the GL5 will eat them.. basically as long as what ever you are putting the GL5 oil into don't have anything like brass then it'll be ok.( GL4 if it has brass or bronze)
I have since dropped my oil from my xfer 2 x now to check what's going on and it's perfectly clean, nothing like it was that's for sure so I know im heading down the right path with the xfer..
Also from what I have heard.. most manual gearbox's have bronze or brass as part of there design and you should really check the manufacturer's recommended oil type.. Some of the newer gearbox's not like an 1985 odd( or older) do handle the GL5 as it's designed to but might be post 1990 or close to it.
After what I've been through I'd put GL4 to be safe.. it'll be just as good.. and on a side note probably cheaper which is always good.
Someone else might chime in to clarify later model parts etc.. but if you're in the older stuff then the gl4 is it..
This by far is my opinion due to trial and error.. and has cost a bit over the time I have worked out what I needed.

Cheers, I think I will change it. Should be fine in the diffs I would have thought so will just keep what I take out of gearbox and put it in the diffs when they get all watery haha.
where have you been buying oil from down here?
Cheers,
Pete

Very good info and also applies to most manufacturers of that era. I run fully synthetic GL-4 from Super Cheap + 1/4 moreys

I ring Elf in chch and they do a 4-5 ltr of 80-90 GL4 for 40 bucks, also I get the worm drive oil too at 45 bucks but for the diffs anything from ripco or bnt would work..As bnt can only get gl4 in 20 ltr buckets and repco are bloody hopeless 200 ltrs..zzz so Elf is great..
Re: hilux gear box oil gl4 or gl5
I put Elf 80w90 GL5 in my 130 surf box a couple months back, has been fine so far. BUT after talking to a gearbox specialist last week I will be getting it nice and hot and swapping it out for GL4 SOON.
He had a hilux box in bits and showed me the small orifice that the oil needs to get through to lubricate the 5th gear needle bearing, it's small. His claim that cold running around town, especially when not using 5th gear leads to this bearing failing when running the GL5 oil makes sense to me as it is much thicker than GL4 oil.
