As title states. Its a body lifted 3.5 swb pajero. Keeps poppin out of low range under load, is there any reason its doing this or any ideas on how to fix it? Ive also noticed a grinding that comes and goes as i bounce over bumps. Best described as metal teeth grinding under impact of the bumps. Stuffed transfer case?

I'm going to guess that the gear lever is touching the body due to the lift.
When you hit a bump the lever is pushed and the gear is partially disengaged causing the grinding noise. The torque from the engine will also cause the gearbox to move around on its mounts too.
Take the centre console out and the gear lever boots off and check for any marks showing contact points. May be able to cut a little out of the body to make it all fit.
Heath.
Of course I could be totally wrong

Yup that would be my guess also... Lever contacting body due lift...

Its probably rubbing on the centre console, Most need trimmed to get low range, cut a notch out of the front of it where the lever pushes up to it.

I cut 10mm x 20mm from floor where the gear lever rubbed and also moved the whole centre console back 10mm.

Dam. So its none of the above. Was leaning on the lever last night towing a Surf with a blown headgasket back through the Muriwai beach entry. The lever kicked out so hard it bruised my palm. It kicks out with such force and just starts grinding. Its the transfer box eh? Stupid question i know but ill try and source a second hand one and pay a mechanic to put it in.

It will be the sliding dog and the synchro teeth on the low ratio gear worn out. It will need a rebuild of your transfer case or find a second hand one
