Hi all. im in need of a vitara rear locker but don't want to spends around $500 for a lock right. Does anyone one know where I could finder a cheaper one for sale or is there a second hand one up for sale at all.

heaps mate. I would turn to that option if my wagon was just a bush basher, since its my daily ride i would be better off with a auto locker so it can be onroad and offroad. welding does work wonders tho

As a daily driver you don't even want to go the auto locker way.
Learn to drive off road properly by picking the right line and wheel placement. Know your vehicle and you will go a long way even without a locker.
If you have to have a locker then save and get a diff lock such as ARB or other air locker.

Yeah but Ralfie you're just saying that because you're a Land Rover snob and selectable is the only option for those vehicles, Plus they have a problematic carrier that needs to be replaced anyway, unless its the Dana 60, in which case you're f**kd anyway because its most likely full time 4wd, and despite being a one-ton diff that in its home market is under 5000kg+ Cummins powered RAM trucks without problems, the LR 'Salisbury' version was still mfd. under license in the UK using shitty British steel.

Tonnes of people run auto lockers in their daily drivers! They are a maintenance free upgrade that are very effective & have a million times less moving parts than any selectable locker. If installed correctly they should be well behaved on the road, you just adapt your driving style a bit. Do you have any experience with installing them or running them?!

As much as I hate to say it, I have to agree. I had an auto locker in my Samurai for about 2 years, it drove fine on the road.

I agree, ive had a lock right for about 2 years now and i wouldnt be without it, offroad it makes a massive difference and allows you to crawl over areas that youd normaly need to hit with a fair bit of momentum to get a wheel back on the ground. On the road its been good too... if you cant drive a daily with an auto locker installed... its either not setup properly or your driving it wrong, you do have to slightly adjust the way you approach roundabouts. Overall highly recommend autolocker.

Ummm you can get a Detroit locker for a LR ...... Full carrier .....

Lunchbox Lockers (Lockright / Lokka / Spartan etc) are the cheapest auto unlocker option .
Don't really affect road driveabitly in the LWB vehicle , but in the SWB can have some interesting quirks around corners and at low speeds .
They can also cause sledging offload while trying to corner , make reversing difficult and have a habit of unlocking unexpectedly while descending steep hills .
Full Carrier auto unlockers (Detroit / Grizzly ) have slight better manners than the lunch box lockers but essentially operate the same
A selectable locker (ARB / Kam / Zip / TJM) is definatly the best option,only on when you want it to be , but $$$$

I have lokka lockers front and rear in my hilux, daily drive. Their website lokka.com, with the high dollar there are around $300 an axle for the hilux, delivered.

The front locker doesn't affect 2wd at all, it does make the steering heavier in 4wd, but only to the extent that you know your in 4wd not 2wd. The turning circle in 4wd is worse, but being a hilux it was never great.

The rear locker clicks a bit on tight low speed turns on high friction surfaces, ie sealed roads turning at intersections, round-a-bouts and carparks, it just means you don't gas it when doing tight turns on pavement.

On the open road, at normal road speed I can't tell the difference between an open rear diff and an auto locker one.

Off road there is a huge difference, where before I could cross axle my ute driving across a drain it is now impossible to loose drive, and I have triedIII
I have stopped uphill with opposite front and rear tyres in the air, then low first and it just drives away, even in 2wd.

You do have to learn how to drive round abouts and sharp turning but any sacrifice made for on road driving is more than made up for when off road. I have only had to use my winch a couple of times since installing the locker. And there's one on trade me for $350 at the mo.

I would go the autolocker too, had front and rear in the Prado, only issue I had was locker + straight 6 + heavy right foot + 5.29 gearing I broke a few R&P's until I stopped being silly

bump! hha im after a locker for my 1600 rear diff.. has anyone got one to see or know someone that is selling one. finding out before I look into geting one from the states. cheers all
