Not so much of being an idiot but one of not doing the correct thing when driving off road.
The hill was steep and slippery and you will note he didn't actually 'drive' down, but panic took over, locked all brakes and it slide down gaining momentum (speed) as gravity took control.

Looked like he was getting some momentum to come up the other side (where camera was) and got a bounce which sent him off line. Then he paniced and locked the brakes which made him increase speed and lose any control.
From that point he may as well have opened the door and got out
Lucky passengers.
Reminds me of some 4x4 training I gave a few years back. We were doing a steep climb and decent and teaching the "feet off" decent. Letting engine brakeing slow the truck. All was going well until one girl put the truck in neutral at the top.
She did as she was told and kept her feet off all the pedals, we came down the hill like a roller coaster................ FaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrKKKKKKK
