There is no cost effective repower if you need to pay someone.

Try and find a good condition second hand motor of the same type as in your truck and get a local mechanic to swap it for you.

a good repower is the 5mge, 6mge or the 7mgte out of the crowns and the supras, the only downer is they arnt the best for towing compared to the v6 or diesel, but you can do 100 in second gear, not that you want to, if you need any more info i got some mates that can help you out

The downside is they are a 30 year old engine... and most of em are knackered or on their way to being knackered. Yep, a great conversion for more ponies, and cheaper than most conversions but you need to look at what you want the truck for... if its a daily driver get another diesel... if its a full-on toy get a 2JZ... if you need cheap-as-chips and you don't care throw a 5M at it...

...remember the extra power comes hand in hand with extra breakages and MUCH extra fuel costs... if you're not mechanically minded or well off you might be better off with a replacement diesel...

Having said that, theres nothing quite like the sound of a singing Supra motor in mud :)

And I had one already to find a new owner but ....New guy got a deal and a half, spare motors, Extractors, computors, heavy flywheels, comp. clutch, lockers, Lsd's, new springs, etc.. etc ..and thats just the spares. cheaper than repowering or replacing a diesel head. Oh well shit happens

Honestly, having met you only breifly once Brian, i would say it would be better to throw a new head on it and a 3" straight through exhaust.

The reason i say this is that a second hand engine with a waranty will be around $4.5k for just the motor. You may pick one up cheaper, but a few thousand K'smore on the clock and you may be in the same situation you are now. 2LT's are good like that.

IMHO the best investment for your hard earned cash in this situation is a new head

For the 1kz i did recently (3l turbo diesel surf), it cost $1200 for a new head. That included getting all the valve gear from the old head swapped onto the new head. We were told it would have cost $300 to have got the head fitted. Half way through the job i realised $300 was an exceptionally fair price for getting that head fitted.

Give Tauranga repowers a call, see what it will cost you to get them to give it some TLC. You will gat a warranty with it aswell.

Then once you have it back on the road, get it booked into an exhaust shop ASAP and get a 3" system fitted.

Then some tow hooks and mud tyres and come out in the mud with us

If you are going to stay with the 2LT then make sure the cooling system is in good nick and fit and aftermarket temp gauge.

The Toyota gauge is so inaccurate that by the time it gets hot on the gauge the motor is cooked.

The 2.8 non turbo diesel motor is pretty reliable however repairing your existing motor is most likely the cheapest option unless you are able to do some of the work yourself.

A petrol conversion with a 6 cylinder is definitely the way to go though, the motor itself will be cheaper than the repair work on your existing motor but the conversion costs will push it up.
