Spot the oil leak, guess the source TD27T. 91 Path DieselUSA

I started a thread in the diesel forum and got a few responses. Was hoping maybe to get a few more here in the nissan specific thread.
=================================
Hi,

What a relief it was to find this forum of tons of golden knowledge! I am one of the few in the USA with a TD27T. I did not perform the swap on this truck so I am still trying to learn a bit about the Td27 and Nissan Diesels in general. I did all the basic maintence when I aquired the truck, such as changing the oil to 10W40 Diesel Blend, Fuel Filter, and coolant flush. I am however now having an oil leak that appears to come from the passenger side, and then leaks down and drips off the oil pan. Any ideas as to what is leaking? I'm trying to figure out this annoying leak without much success at this point. I'd like to determine if this is normal blowby or a bigger issue at hand. Thank you guys! I will attach some photos.

Any help or confirmation of where the oil is leaking from; and also what car did this motor come from? Thank you!

we did say to you that the oil filter isn't sealed properly.

you can see oil sitting on the top of the oil filter where it would normally sit
flush with the housing.

and I think your question was answered about what engine this is and where it originated..

Crash - Thank you so much for clarifying again, I see what you mean. I'll pull the filter and see if maybe there is an old gasket underneath.

As far as the engine type, I am 100% positive it is a TD27 as it is stamped on the right hand side... Just wondered more about this particular model..

Yea it sure is a td27. Its just not the (common round here) terrano variant we're used to.
It appears to be very similar to the one used in the nissan caravan (chassis E24), although it could very well be from another vehicle.
The inlet manifold and tappet cover are the bits that suggest its from the van.
As for oil leak, best bet is to degrease it and get it nice and clean.
Then start it up and see if it leaks anywhere.
If not, take it for a short and recheck for leaks.
Cheers

So I had the filter changed and the shop said they did see oil on top of the filter, but that it was not double gasketed. They also said they did notice quite a bit of oil pooled on the passenger side, could this be rear main seal or something? I will see if it still leaks this week in my work parking lot.

Why not change the filter yourself? It's an easy job and then you can have a good look around the area with your own eyes. Might spot something else causing this while you're at it.

Mine had a leak from the back of the alternator, oil for the vaccuum pump.
There's also an oil line to the turbo....it could leak.
Mine also drips oil from the vent on top of the tappet cover, it should be connect to the turbo, but who wants that gunk going into the engine...(I'll sort out a catch can when I move back to a city, but for now I have a hose directing it back to the ground from where it came). :P
Another leak was the tappet cover gasket, it ran to the back of the engine then down and dripped off the sump.
My injector pump also leaked :(
Damn brake reservoir leaked too.. :(

All good now, good luck

My fender is all cut up; I paid $10 USD to have them change the filter really quick and not have to mess with it anymore.. :D

Thanks for your help guys!

Still leaking oil. I would just like to clear up if this is simply blow by or somthing more serious.. It is not the oil filter and it was not double gasketed..

Leak appears to be on the right hand side (USA Passenger side ).. Any guidance from anyone?
Thanks!!!

Sump gasket springs to mind, get the bash plate off, give it the hell wash and take it for a run.

Thanks guys! I'll have to dig deeper this weekend. Any chance this is normal blow by? If so where would normal blow by come from?

i was told once that if a diesel doesnt leak oil then there is no oil in the motor, on that note i decided to try and fix my oil leak and i replaced rear main seal sump gasket rocker cover gasket recond turbo and seals fitted a catch tank for the turbo blow by and it still leaked oil never enough to get the engine low on oil before the next oil change but just bugged me. but id clean everything spotlessly with brakelean and a water blaster then you should see the culprit.

Thanks buddy. That's kinda what I was thinking. It's enough to irritate but it's definatly only leaking a drop or two.. Thanks for your help guys!

I put up with an irritating leak for far too long, only to find it was from the oil pressure sender! dead easy dead cheap fix.

The only leak I have now is a very very slow one, say 1 or 2 drops a month from the steering pump.

Remember guys, left hand drive so his passengers side is our drivers. Pressure sender high on the culprit list. Not a heap of oil galleries on that side of the motor.

Cheers,
