off topic Autotrans question

Post by Pedro »

Got a 98 V8 fairmont, fired it up the other day and had a noise from the auto, put it into R or D or any gear and noise goes away, put it in neutral or Park and the noise come back, sounds like a cross between a V belt rumble/grinding. car drives fine, auto works as normal, torque clutch seems to lock up as usual.

Going to start with a a oil change and pick up filter, cant check the oil as ford in their infinite wisdom don't put dipsticks on the bloody thing!!! also going to check if there any lumpy bits in the trans pan.

Any one got any idea on what it could be.

Cheers

probably way off here but, couldnt be the startermotor trying to engage in park or neutral? might be quite loud if this was the case though.

if it were bolts it would be a metallic knocking noise, as for starter engaging it definitely aint that...

Heard this one before with a dodgy ignition switch...
Would fire up the starter when in N or P...
But the inhibit system would turn it off when in gear..
Not sure why it wouldn't start cranking when you just turned on the ignition... Auto start

Another one is low fluid level and it makes noises as the fluid goes around its bypass circuits...

Not necessarily. Had a chev blazer lose flex plate bolt torque and bell housing bolt torque. While the bolts did not physically hit anything, the flexing and vibration of the lose flex plate caused symptoms as you describe.
