Gutless 91 GQ

Can anyone explain to me why my TD42 struggles to climb inclined roads after running for a couple of hours?

It is a non turbo LWB, 5spd manual, 242 thosand kms (on the clock) 31" mud tires, all plenty of good reasons to be slugish but when its cold or hasnt been running long it performs how i would expect a 4.2l to up a hill. Its only when ive been driving for a couple of hours and i get onto an incline that it has no power in 5th or 4th gear, i have to sit in 3rd at 2000rpm and watch the smoke pour out the back and the temp gauge climb.

Can anyone offer suggestions to fix/beat this problem.

Cheers

3 things, set up pump timing , rebuild rocker assembly , or remove and check tappett faces and shaft condition , and then usually reduce the fuel slightly till it runs clearer , also run through the basics like air and fuel filter before you do all the above

hmmm non turbo TD42..good for what 90 kw. when they were new...

surprised you don't have to hook second.

since it's a 91 and not to technologically advanced I'd say the banjo fitting atop the injector pump there'll be a small gauze filter most likely filled with gunk. and if that's filled with gunk then suggest changing you fuel filter more regularly.

Extractors have been known to make a big difference to help the engine breath easier.

How much blow by is getting into the intake manifold. is it black and gunkgy or not?

check the fuel tank breather. you may be getting vacuum in the fuel tank. simple test is to unscrew fuel cap. you may hear a slight woosh a air gets sucked in.

Might pay to check the small banjo filter in the ip as well.

Have gone through and done the basics, air cleaner and fuel filter with no progress on the smoke at this stage but judging by the black sludge i saw inside the old fuel filter i guess it will be running better by defualt.

Spoke with a deisel pump reconditioner here in Ashburton and he suggested with the amount of kms on it i should be looking and new injectors. He quoted me $320+gst including labour, sounded resonable.

Also when looking for the bango on the injector pump with the gauze, is it the top one with the bleed screw or the lower one?

What is involved with rocker assembly recon?

Next steps for me are oil and filter change because its due and im going to have the radiator reconditioned, peice of mind and all that.

That is very resonable. I got a quote for $510+gst to recondition NOT including labour.....not sure if I need it done yet, but any diesel mechanic will be able to test them before spending all that money.

Its the top one with the bleed screw. I will double check my manual later and see if i can get a pic up for you.

"a second small filter is located inside the fuel return pipe banjo, if the main fuel filter is dirty or the engine is blowing black smoke this filter should be checked, this small filter cannot be separated from the banjo bolt, however, after removing the bolt it is usually possible to clean the gauze"
(1)Remove the fuel return pipe banjo bolt from the injector pump. Discard the washers.
(2)Using an aerosol type carburetor cleaner, clean the inside of the filter. Also check the small hole in the banjo is clear. I this cannot be satisfactorily cleaned, renew the banjo bolt assembly.
(3)Using new washers, install the banjo bolt to the injection pump.
(4)Bleed the fuel system."

Quoted from Gregory's hand book

I will be doing this shortly so any tips would be good once you have done yours would be great :D

Miracle Cure!! I've been having some similar problems with my trusty ol' TD27T for about two weeks now, really down on power and tons of black smoke. I pulled the banjo bolt out and gave it a good blast with some brakleen, stuck it back in and the old girl goes like rocket again  . There is a tiny hole in the bolt and it appeared to be blocked with diesel gunk. Really easy to fix took me about ten minutes.

Cheers

then that black gunk that should be there is now either in your injector pump or in your injectors.

The fuel feed line hasn't got a filter inside it, which I found really strange, the filter is on the return line on the back of the pump and is swaged into the banjo bolt.

Double check guys...it's not uncommon for some muppets to remove or not replace the small filter.

You can't see it from the top once the banjo bolt has been removed!!!
Go fishing with some small gauge wire with a hook on the end, it's how I got mine out to clean it.

This is 6 pages on the small filter, has pics of it and will probably help you guys.

My injector pump appears to be a little bit different from what the picture in the manual shows, instead of a bleed screw mine has a flange nut with a wire attached to it and some kinf of plug next to it?? I think its a fuel cut solenoid.

Is anyones elses like this? I just want to know if the process to bleed it will be the same. Pretty keen to get in there and clean the gauze, sounds like its helped alot of people with the same problem as me.

Ok so just been in and removed the banjo off the fuel return line. No quick fix for me unfortunantly. Mine does not have a banjo gauze.

Next step im guessing is to have my injector nozzles looked at. Anyone advise against getting reconditioned nozzles vs getting new ones?

Can do if you've done 300xxx k's without having them done. (Like mine)

So I went back to the injector pump guy here in Ashbburton and after he had a nosey under the bonnet, showed me the date mark that coincidently he put on the injector pump 5 years ago when he reconditioned it. Small world! He also believes my injector were done at the same time, also there are paint marks indicating the head has been off (head bolts torqued to yield) . So good news in one sense that I don't need to worry about a costly pump rebuild any time soon but now I'm back to square one as to why my truck is smoking so heavily.

I had new injectors done in mine at the start of this year, It was probably the first time they had been done (at a guess) and I didn't notice any improved performance or economy, but my egt's dropped by about 20-35deg. They reckon injectors should be done every 100,000 but I got mine done mainly because of the boost I'm running and the injectors were the only remaining part to be done.

Would anyone advise against bolting on an aftermarket turbo kit?

It's probably done about 300 thousand kms but considering its had a partial rebuild in the last 5 years, if i ran low boost (8-9psi) would I still get a decent life span out of it with proper maintenance?

I second this magic brew. Use it religiously. 100ml squirt with every fill ad my girl runs clean and without a beat.Might have something to do with being a Toyota. On a serious note try Morelys. Worth its weight in gold
