85 Hilux stuck in 2WD

Was out for a 4wd and everything was working fine, took out the hubs took it out of 4wd, later on I put hubs in again to go into 4wd but wont come out of 2H, the lever has play but wont slot into anything, any suggestions?

could be the ball on end of lever suggest remove boot and remove lever and check what the end looks like. mine is worn so sometimes it gets stuck in 4WD can move between 4H and 4L but wont go back to 2H but after a little bit of driving it slots back in no problem.
