another overheating terrano
This is really getting to me! all info to sort this outfound here and still no luck help! 90 model import terrano
new radiator
new water pump
new hoses
new coolant
even had the viscous clutch off to day and inspected the oil/silicone all good
now it only gets hot when air con is on or uphills dont have the aircon up hills or the temp gage hits 120 degrees way to quick, so im left with either i need another fan on tje condencer or a head check am i on the right track? the previous owner is positive if i make up/find some of those engine bay guards in the wheel well to the chassis those things it will stop the problem...really? any help would be great!
cheers guys.

Do a leak down test and a water jacket pressure test. Do you still have the shroud around the fan?
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
Re: another overheating terrano
hope with all those parts you got a new thermostat
Re: another overheating terrano
was in a rush before nagging girl friend, has shroud pressure tested rad, thermostat is new also has transcooler im at wits end. 10years as a mechanic and this is stumped me

Re: another overheating terrano
when it gets hot do you stop and see if it is
it may be reading hot when not does it boil

Re: another overheating terrano
has after market temp gauge installed and boiled it last saturday and blew up the top hose so shes boiling alright
Re: another overheating terrano
well it may be head gasket or cracked head

Don't let it get ya

Go back to basics.
Water circulating?
Water shedding heat through radiator?
Airflow over radiator?
Gauge accurate?
Check temp of water going into engine, not only going out of engine.
Test components-don't just replace things and hope its going to fix it. How do you know the replacment part isn't faulty? (new is no guarantee)
You'll find the problem if you take the time to check everything over. Surely 10 years as a mechanic you'll have some workmates who can help ya out?
You'll get it if you work over every thing rythmatically (is that a word??)
Re: another overheating terrano
dealership mechanic so some things are new to me (one of them toyota boys) itsvlike the thing just cant deal with the climate in QLD
Re: another overheating terrano
What size tyres are you running.
Re: another overheating terrano
235/75r15 not sure what that is in metruc 28-29inch :s i have a set of 31x10.5 15 i wont to put on.
Re: another overheating terrano
did you replace radiator because of cooling problems or just to upgrade truck and now there problems
pressure tests would show up heads or block or head gasket I think
long shot is the radiator working or the correct size.

Ok so it only does it as above...
My gut feeling is telling me there is not enough air coming thru ...to remove the heat from the radiator.
And the viscous fan is faulty... Just cause its full of silicone doesn't mean its working...
There is a bimetallic spring coil on it which moves the valve around when its hot and changes the amount of fluid it bypasses...
If its broken or jammed up then it may not couple the fan properly...
Normally it will roar rather loud when it kicks in...
My 10 cents worth....

Yep, my money is on the fan too.
I would also check the aircon radiator is not fouled with bugs and other shit as it sits in front of the engine radiator and could be obstructing airflow.
As for radiator shrouds, mine has the bottom section removed since I did the body lift and I have no issues with over heating; well not any more
I know of some who have removed theirs all together and have no issues either. When the fan is working as it should it sucks a power of air.
edit; There is the possibility that you may have an airlock in the block somewhere too?

Re: another overheating terrano
after a bit of playing around this morning im looking at the fan again on start up its not "roaring" bit annoying as its had 2 water pumps in the last 2 years previous owner said so rad/condencer/transcooler are all clear of muck. will source another pump and fit a extra fan to condencer.
i didnt fit new parts was done before i bought it but had all receits dated no more than 6 months ago.

Re: another overheating terrano
Fan wont "roar" until it starts to get hot enough to activate the hub and make the fan do some work...
Mine only does it when air cond on for a while or some serious throttle work...
You can feel the engine load up when it kicks in....

they can engage at start up as the fluid in the hub all drains to the bottom of the hub and when you start the engine the fluid locks the hub for a few seconds until it is pumped out of the hub back into the reservoir.

Erm, could you not just buy a new hub without having to replace the whole pump?

Re: another overheating terrano
i would be inclined to check what radiator was fitted. seen the odd case of new radiator being worse then a 2nd hand factory one.

Re: another overheating terrano
does the truck smoke much? High egts will make it heat up pretty quick.
Also check to make sure it actually has a thermostat in it because if it doesn't the water can travel too fast through the radiator and it wont cool down enough before it leaves the radiator

Re: another overheating terrano
I think it's just TD27Ts in Terrano.

it smokes very little even with my foot on the floor yea thermostat is in when i put the new hoses on.

not true.
reason no thermostat makes it run hot is the bypass port is left open. it needs the thermostat to block it. that means a sizable % of water simply bypasses the radiator through the bypass and doesn't get cooled.
Re: another overheating terrano
new parts fitting only works if you replace every part of ALL the TRUCK
I bet I hope but it seems to me theres a miss match here and not a total loss

if i took some photos could some of you be able to tell if the parts are a miss match?
