Hi all,

Truck has now passed cert and I had planned to drive it to gore today to get the cert plate but after 20 min decided to turn round as the gbox was making a weird noise.

Can only hear the noise when going above about 60km/h and it gets worse the faster you go. Only happens when there is no load on the drive line ie when clutch is in or when coasting not when accelerating or engine braking.

doesn't matter what gear the gbox is in even happens in neutral.

If I put my first transfer case in neutral the noise stays the same. if I put the second case in neutral the noise goes away. So my guess is the issue is between the cases where the adaptor is

sounds a bit like a buggered bearing but also a bit like something metal is just rubbing lightly. Anyone got any tips before I look to take it apart? Is there anything with the adaptor that can be done wrong (I didn't put them together).

mates safari was making similar sounding noises turned out to be the universal joint at top of rear driveshaft. myt be worth a look before go ripping into gbox

Cheers for the reply. At this Stage I wouldn't this that would be it as putting the rear transfercase in neutral makes the sound go away however this doesn't effect the drive shaft as it will still be spinning.

At this stage I am wondering if the proper gaskets have been used between the cases. One of the website said that some after market ones do not have the right holes for oiling the bearings in the adaptor.

Nobody with any other thoughts?

Probably due to no load on the driveshaft.. I'd be checking that first for sure..

i have also had the same sort of noise when my safari is in neutral and have put it down to the rear end being lifted more than the front and this will put the flange faces of the rear diff and the rear t case output out of parallel. well thats my theory on the matter anyway.

Yea thats what I have put it down to at this stage. The people on the malin crawler site all said I should put a double cardin joint on the rear shaft

I have one here if you want but needs a rebuild.. just taking up space..
