turbo charging an Nissan RD 28

I have a non turbo Series1 RD 28 that i want to turbo charge.
Nissan Safaris came out with RD28 with factory turbos, if i score all the manifolds , intercoolers etc can i bolt on this equipment and make my engine perform better.
From the info i have seen in Aussie, there are significant differences in the RD 28 Turbo engines and there is a huge selection of turbo engines and turbo parts for sale in Aussie. These engines are widely used in the Nissan Safaris which are prolific in Queensland especially.
I am seriously contemplating buying a second hand turbo engine there and shipping it back to NZ, they range in price from $1000A up to $6000A for a recond engine.
Any advise gratefully accepted.

You will need to put a pressure diaphram on your injector pump to increase the fuel under boost or you will lean the engine. you can cram all the air you want in there but if the air fuel ratio isn't corrected you wont see much gain at all.

the 97 onwards one were electronically controlled

its diesel not petrol.
don't need to worry about air fuel ratio or other such nonsense.
only thing you have to watch is not over fueling it especially when off boost, which is what the boost comp (pressure diaphragm) is for.
if your not winding up fuel much you can get away without it.

as far as turbos and manifolds go, i had a quick look some years back. there is a couple of different heads so i'm not sure if the turbo version will fit the earlier heads.
there are RD28T motors over here, maybe not as popular as TD42 but they are around. if you want to import one japan might be a whole lot cheaper and easier. having said that they often rip them out and replace them with TD42 especially after the IP crap out.
don't forget they are also under the name of nissan spirit.
afaik they are all electronic IP which don't have a big range of chipping setups for them. probably easier to get a mech IP built for it especially if chasing big power.

Boost made my rd28 go good :-).
Don't get too big a turbo would be my advice. The sooner it starts spooling the better. Wind up fuel screw, then don't labour it off boost or she'll smoke like a , well.. lots.
Turbo bits are very hard to find here in NZ, so importing one from oz is a good scheme. Bring over two an sell one to help pay for the first? Even just a spare exhaust manifold or two.
I started with a factory ex manifold, made up rest of kit myself.
The series 1 rd28 has smaller inlet manifold and plumbing than series 2. Theres rumor of 18 valve in the late model ones, but I've never seen any evidence to support that theory.
Go nuts, and have fun.
Don't worry about the strength of the non turbo motor, they're so cheap to buy a replacement!

It's pretty obvious it's a diesel tweake ya muppet.

the 18 valve was introduced in the series two powering the laurel, gloria and cedric sedans.

the diaphram will make it drivable off boost without all the black smoke.

I.e moving of in a queue at the traffic lights where you may not get on boost untill 100 meters down the road.....which you can get fined and green stickered for now if an officer of the law deems your truck to have excessive visual exhaust emissions.

Supposedly. Yet the late model laurel rd28 i got was a 12 valve.
I've never even seen a picture of a 18valve rd28.
How would it even work being a non-crossflow head??
I would be very keen to be proved wrong here but here goes,
"There is no such thing as an 18valve rd28"

I will try and find an 18 valve RD28, the engine recon guys in oz will know, will email them, have seen a couple of funny looking rocker covers on Gumtree(thats the Oz Trademe). Take a look around there the RD28TD i engines pop up regularly, they are always getting replaced by the 42 in the GU Patrols etc. so there are quite a few runners for sale.

Probably better to post again rather than edit, it can get missed easily as people tend to just read new posts, and miss edited posts :wink:

Two options, either get the ECU and wiring loom to suit motor (and get someone clued up to wire it up for you) or remove eti pump and fit up a mechanical pump. A n/a rd28 pump will work, but a boost compensated pump would be desirable.
What vehicle is your engine to be fitted into?
Mine was a c33 laurel, not a 4x4 so I never put up a build thread. Some good lessons learnt with it tho 8)
