Fuel issue in FJ40 cold start up

Hi all,

I have recently rebuilt the carb (2 barrell holly) and replaced the fuel filter.

On a cold start up it just won't fire up without some fuel being poured into the carb. Once it has fuel poured into the carb it starts right up. And once going it's fine and will keep starting untill it has been sitting for a day or two.

Any idea's ??

Sounds like the float bowl is emptying itself somehow, have a good look around for any leaks.

Are you using a choke to start when its cold?

Needing to pour fuel down the neck usually indicates air leaks in the carb which are more noticeable when the motor is stone cold.

I assume valve clearances and ignition timing are okay?

check if there is excessive clearance play around the throtle shaft. Is the choke butterfly closing fully?
