Toyota Diff Torque Settings

I have the fun job of fitting an ARB Locker to the rear of my Dads Troopy this weekend.

While the locker is fairly straight forward to fit to the diff head, i fitted them to my SJ413, I'm short of the torque settings and backlash setting for putting it all back together.

It's going in the rear of a 2008 Land Cruiser Troop Carrier.

The rear axle is of the full floating, leaf sprung, drum braked variety, commonly found in all sorts of dirty ol' cruisers.

I need the following torques if anyone has the them please:

 Crown Wheel to Carrier bolts

 Bearing cap bolts

 Backlash setting/preload setting

And I probably should also check that the usual pre load set up method works on Toyota diffs just as it does on Suzuki and Land Rover diffs??

Adjust the crown wheel across into the pinion until no back lash is measured, then create the preload by forcing the crown wheel away from the pinion with the other adjuster until the desired back lash is achieved. That method work on Toyotas??

Also any tips of tricks from those experienced types that have fitted lots of ARB lockers before?? Because of the kind of work this truck does, I gotta get it right first time

Cheers :D

I've got a US Gear install booklet here, if it's an 8" use the following:

Pinion preload:
New bearings 12-15inlb
Used bearings 5-6inlb

Carrier bearing torque 150-200ftlb

Backlash 6-10thou (inch)

Ring gear bolts 70ftlb

Bearing cap bolts 70ftlb

I set the carrier backlash by adjusting the crownwheel into the pinion one notch at a time and torque the other side up then measure the backlash. i keep doing this until the correct backlash is achieved.

I second this, Zuk builds tough diffs, and although he does deviate from factory methods and settings, his nuggets are bulletproof...
that sounds just wrong...
Just follow his example and you cant go wrong, carrier bearing preload in particular
