Safari/Patrols - Mileage Versus Years

Post by Tentman »

Gidday Guys

I've been looking at these for a couple of weeks now. I want a vehicle for the occasional trip up to Canterbury (Tahr Hunting) and a little bit of horse-float towing, its normal role will be a light farm work . . . so it won't be an everyday drive. I expect to put less than 10,000 Kms on it a year.

For the $6-7,000 I have in mind to spend I could go sort of get up to 1992 with typically 240-270,000 Kms or go a bit later , typically 1994-96 with about 350,000 Kms.

Does anyone have any ideas which way might be best to go - both the higher mileage ones are factory turbo if that makes any difference (apart from performance). I know you're supposed to check servicing etc. but its a bit academic with these old multi owner vehicles.

Thanks

I would go for lower k's over newer assuming servicing has been carried out correctly in both cases. Turbo will make towing a bit less tedious.

I wouldn't believe the K's on any of them! Buy one that checks out mechanically and structurally.

This.

Cut the red wire = your odo doesn't work but the speedo keeps going.

If you want to tow buy a turbo or don't buy one at all.

If you don't tow then buy any one, in reality they are machines off road and will take any punishment you can throw at them.

A car with no services will die at 100k's a TD42 with all the love and service possible will do 600ks easy - then with minor internal maintenance will do another 300ks

x3

The Safari Odos are not know for there accuracy, some for example read slow others stop for periods of time without any tampering seems to be a Safari thing.

You want an early motor - up to 91/92 anything after this time doesn't have oil injection and the motor's will sh!t themselves fast. This means that you get a slightly older looking Safari with higher kms but you are getting a motor that will outlast the body.

Just my views on this...

Hmmm - there is a lot of opinion on "when" the TD42 changed all over the 'Net but from what I can tell is a Factory Turbo will be on the "good" TD42 no matter what age it is.

So far as speedo readings go, I always check a vehicles VIR and unless it hasn't been getting warrants it shows up (obviously if its been deliberately "clocked" then that won't work either) as at least unusual if its just been disconected.

Id go with the theory that all safari speedos have been dicked with to be honest. There too easy to do, better off just finding a tidy one with good service history. Oh and for towing Id go with turbo. Trust me you dont want to do long stints towing with a non turbo safari..
Softroader VW Amarok nowadays....

when you look at the ks per each warrent on car jam, if it has a nice consent curve on the grath its probly right, if it was consistent then flattened off to 1000ks between each warrent then its been stoped, if you carry on the grapgh at the same angle as before it went to 1000ks between warrents you can probly guess the ks roughly

i just brought a truck 94 patrol nz new i think with 400,000ks has had a aftermarket turbo put on it god knows how long ago, was an ex work truck and didnt look likes ks had been tampered with, goes alright but rings and bearing only last for so long

you could get compression/leak down test before you buy would give an idea of how the compresson is

turbo is deffenatly good for towing otherwise they are very slow
