To goo or not to goo...

Post by zukmeista »

Need to change the oil filter housing (the bit that bolts onto the block) on the Rugger to make room for a turbo, couldn't buy a gasket for it and don't really want to buy a roll of gasket paper for one tiny little job. Would it be a bad idea to use gasket goo?

I bought a small sheet from Repco last year, $8 from memory. It was like 400mm sq.

same situation i had with the surf. just goo it on.
most surfaces theses days are machined very well and don't really need gaskets. make sure surfaces are not pitted. use small amounts, put it on, pull it off and wipe off the excess. make sure nothing will spill over into the oil galleries.

Well that was a monumental fark up... All bolted up, filled it up with 6L of Penrite's finest. Start it up, hmmm oil light not going out, turn it off fark $60 worth of oil all over the driveway :x Turns out there was a little hole on the side of the filter housing for something to screw into, not sure what. Not oil sender as that was in another hole. So now have to get the oil off my parents driveway before I get shot

First job was to clean up all the oil :( Then plugged the hole with a bolt topped up the oil (only lost 3L :) ) started it up and now all seems to be good. Lesson learned? Make sure all the holes are plugged

If the oil is clean which it obviously is, it will absorb into the pores of the concrete and dissappear over a week.
