oil hemorrhage

Post by fish »

today I did a couple jobs on my challenger. i leveled out the front torsion bars gave it a clean and went for a drive.
when i got home it dropped a dinner plate size patch of oil, i moved it into the garage to clean it up and it did the same there then stopped.
its never dropped oil before and it gave me a hell of a shock, its a 4m40.
i took the bash plates off and fond a lot of old gunk built up so i gave it a bit of a clean. the oil seems to be coming from the very bottom of the bellhousing,
right at th lowest point, im sure of this. is that the main seal?
i was planning to run some stop leak stuff for a day or two and keep an eye on it to see how it develops? to they work?

I wouldn't put that shit anywhere near a motor unless you were trying to flog it off the next day to some other poor bugger. Not that I would do that either, but the point is, if the magical mystery fluid can stop a leak that big, imagine what it will do to all the oil galleries and lines inside the engine.

im a bit skeptical myself to be honest but im told it just helps to swell the seals and doesnt thicken the oil.
my only other option is to take it to a mechanic and pay a sqillion dollars?

did some searching and found that the leak is in the bellhousing inspection plate, it overs the window where you can see the flywheelect, so it must be comming from the main seal, thats all thats up there, gutted. unfortunatly taking the box out is beyond my capability,

Seems quite odd that it would start doing it suddenly, maybe check you haven't got a blocked engine breather?

Do a search on the mitsi forum seems its a sort of party trick for the 4m40 and a supper double whammy if your driving at the time. The genuine mitsi part is more expensive but if fits the after market one is slightly to big and has been known to blow out. I payed some one because im slack and didn't want to get dirty but you can do it your self it isn't hard just messy.

could this leak oil? it seems this the highest poit with oil on it,

http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/sites/w ... 1415_0.jpg

shit pic i know, but its the best i could do, i think thats the injector wit the 1 on it, there is oil in the nooks and crannys there, no obviose leak spot. could it be a seeping oil leak?
also my theory with the sudden puddle is,

oil has been leaking for some time, and has built up behind the inspection plate in the bellhousing, then when i water blasted the uderside i unblocked it and it ran out, the drip has since slowed to one or two per day now.
i now think that its not the rear main seal but rather the rocker cover seal or head,
oil is running down the back of the egine and through the bellhousing and out the bottom. there is a little hole there for that reason i think, see link.

there the guy has the plate off to jam th fly wheel. you can see the hole in the middle between the bolts,
am i on the right track.
