hey guys,
Im back again to pick your brains, Im here as a last resort. I recently replaced my radiator with a brand new brass one I got made. Filled it with coolant, did my best at bleeding it, took it for a drive and after about 45 min the temp needle started climbing. I managed to get it home without it getting to hot. But decided to replace the rad cap and thermostat to see if that was the fault, took it for another drive this time took over an hour for it to happen but it started getting hot again.
This got me thinking it might be an air flow problem, checked the fan and it seems pretty good. I also removed the air con condensor. Another test drive and another climbing temp gauge. Now I was thinking coolant wasnt flowing so did a flush with one of those rad cleaners from Super cheap but hardly anything substantial came out. Last thing was water pump but it looks near new to me. So I am stumped..
Anyone have any ideas as to what could be the problem?
Cheers Bryan

Re: Prado getting hot
Not a toyota owner but if it has a viscous fan (which i thought prados did have) it could be failing to lock up at high temp hence the time its taking to overheat?
Re: Prado getting hot
Is the engine a 1KZ-TE?
Re: Prado getting hot
Woops should have mentioned its the lazy 2lt-E.
Swamped It does have a viscous fan Im not 100% sure how to check them. Although I turned the hand throttle up to around 2000rpm and standing by the drivers door I could feel the air being pushed out under the truck by the fan.

Re: Prado getting hot
Why did u replace radiator in the first place? If it's caus it got hot u may find u have more serious problems than the cooling system..
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
Re: Prado getting hot
Its likely that its the original viscous fan and should be replaced ideally. You can test if its the viscous by drilling a hole through it and locking it.
Do you know when the water pump was last changed?
With cooling issues you are usually best to just replace everything if you can afford it. 20 year old truck could do with new bits and saves the waste of coolant each time you do more work.
Also worth fitting a decent after market temp gauge. Is the shroud still fitted?

Re: Prado getting hot
I might have a spare 2LTe viscous fan in the garage, will have a look
Get your head checked as well, could be cracked

70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)
Re: Prado getting hot
you can re oil and adjust the viscous, no need for a new one.
Also fit a better fan. Read this for ideas.
I have done all this and it has lowered my temps heaps.
