my day of prado problems 1kz

Post by You Get That »

Thought i would post up my day of problems with my 1kz prado to see if anyone's had the same problem and any advice.

the truck has been going fine lately (haven't driven it much lately tho) and today i put my new winch on the truck.

went up to the paddock to pull myself up a small incline to keep rope under tension, when i was pulling the rope out the trucks engine died i went and tryed to start it again and it wouldn't start was just random.

left it for a few hours in the paddock and came back and it started ok, i thought bloody thing and drove it back home to the workshop and it died again getting home!! Thought it was a fuel issue so changed filter started it up and cracked each injector and heaps of diesel sqquirting out.

drove back up the road and it was good untill i pulled up on side of road and it died again and wouldn't start up... sat for 15-20 min and started it up and drove home, now it will run good die randomly but start straight up.

Thoughts?? haha
bit anoyed cos it just just got a wof on friday and was looking forward to getting away for xmas.

Get your ECU checked mine did that with similar symptoms (anything electrical in Nelson fixes them)

Just been through this,ECU. $150 and Jack in AKL did a full restore by replacing all the caps, a resisitor and a tiny bit of corroded track. 3 day turn around. His current Listing #: 677165651 on Trade Me. His number is 021 0230 5420. Super friendly and informative.

I thought it was the injector pump and all sorts

you can meter out the valves on the pump to see if you have a faulty one.

Sounds like ecu all the way, is above the glove box, if you open it you may see the caps all bulging, The rear locker ecu is in passenger foot well behind kick panel, doubt it is the ecu on the locker, would look at plugs at the locker and the electric motor first as they live in the mud.

Had my Prado ECU done by Anything Electronic between Christmas & New Year 2 years ago. Turn around was quick and am still very grateful for what they did, and when.

If you want to use another ECU, it has to be from a Prado, Surf ones are different, and it needs to be from the same transmission type, as yours. There is a good wreckers somewhere in Dunners, that might have something.
I do think yr best bet is getting it rebuilt though.

Is there an electronics repair place near you? someone who repairs TV's might be able to have a go at your ECU

Anything Electronic in Nelson did mine for $220 with a 2 year guarantee and a reasonably quick turn around time. Can't remember their phone number but they have their own website so a quick Google will find them.
Might be a bit quicker being they're also in the mainland.

Just a thought but how about starting a thread titled "1kz ECU repair" (or whatever) and put the details (address, web page, phone number etc) of who does the repairs through out NZ (and Aussie too if we must  ) so anyone doing a search will find the info easily next time.

Pull the ecu codes and see what you get...
Did the guys who serviced your ECU test it??
As I am led to believe the team at Anything Electronics have a test bed which they hook the ECU's into for trouble shooting... and not just a visual look over and cap replacement...

Otherwise start with the fuel filter.. check it isn't sucking in air. Clear pipe from filter to pump will show up any bubbles...

Never been able to get this crowd to do anything for me. They always just say "sorry, we don't deal with Joe Private, get your garage to send it to us".
How hard can it be?
