Hi Waipara can be fun, if not too much water can drive down stream from the highway bridge to the beach and then north to the cliffs for a look. Can then head back along the beach past the Waipara and back up the Kowhai for a nice loop. Alternatively head upstream from the bridge and I usually bug out after 7km at Stringers Rd. The Waipara has some great soft pea gravel in places if underwater this can get very soft

Other easy trips include up the Selwyn, across Birdlings Flat and up Bossu Rd or the Takamatua stock track that joins Old Le Bons Track to Summit Rd
Check out some of the local 4wd clubs for the best trips and info

Start at Birdlings Flat and drive across the causeway (as long as it has not been removed to open the lake to the sea). The gravel in the middle can be a little soft. If playing a lot on the gravel air down or have another vehicle for a tow. Some great views along the coast as you climb so take a couple of stops. Here are some trip pics FYI

Hey there, new to the 4wd scene as well and am also keen on a few mellow day trips leading up to joining a 4wd club and getting into some more serious terrain once I'm certified.
Would be keen to get I involved if ya want someone else to help pull ya out the river or vice versa!
Ive got a 84 hilux surf chassis with a 94 body, 3L turbo, near 10" lift kit with snorkel, winch, 35s etc.
Keen to get amongst and meet some chch 4wd locals.
Chur.
