Changing from auto hubs to Manuel

Post by evilsurf »

I have a 1993 surf with auto hubs, my cvs keep splitting I think it may be because the front is wound up ? What will Manuel hubs do and is their much involved in doing this ??

You don't have auto hubs. You have the Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD) setup. Your "hubs" are fixed steel flanges that spin the CVs 100% of the time.

Fitting manual free wheeling hubs is a good idea as it stops CVs from spinning when hubs are unlocked and fitting these is as simple as removing the flanges and replacing with 26 spline hubs of your choice (not 30 spline as they are for solid front axle Hiluxes).

I'm not going to go into detail how the ADD system works because there is plenty of info if you google it... Basically vacuum engages/disengages a sleeve on the passenger side of the front diff to allow some of the 4wd/2wd activation...

4WD activation is exactly the same as normal, except you have to lock the hubs for your front wheels to be driven. There is no extra harm if you choose to drive on the road normally in 2WD with your hubs locked as essentially it is the same as having the fixed flanges still fitted.

Absolutely it will help your CVs. Cheap and easy "upgrade". Also means you can completely disengage the front end if you do blow a CV while 4WDing.

When buying, try and aim for the factory 'AISIN' branded ones. These are the toughest and pop up on trade me every now and then. They are expensive, but you can get good deals around $100 for a pair sometimes.

I was running AVM units on my previous Hilux without any issues at all.

Actually, I just remembered I have a pair of the AISIN 26 spline units. What part of the country are you based?

Ive got them at Blenheim at the moment... Been in Timaru over the Christmas break and didn't bring everything down with me. I'll be going back up this Sunday and can either send them down or organise someone to drop them off to you. Could have dropped them off in my travels if I had them with me..

fitting manual hubs will save a lot of unnecessary wear on the Cv's, but it won't do anything for the breakages.
causes of them breaking can be the angle the CV's sit at, power your putting through them or if your spinning one wheel and dropping it onto a grippy surface.

Put an auto locker in the front, reduced mikes breakages heaps

Just be careful. They do take a good amount of abuse, but as Tweake said, you will pop them if you lift a wheel and bring it down onto a hard surface with the loud pedal down.

With the IFS setup, you want to be as careful as possible, because if you aren't blowing CVs, you are ripping teeth off your front diff. It just isn't the strongest setup in the world, but if driven sensibly, it will hold up just fine.

I was running 33x12.5 wranglers on my previous Hilux for over 12 months and drove that through some tough terrain, but with good throttle control and knowing when to back off, I had no issues at all with the front end.

Ok sweet we'll I'm sure I won't be going that fast having a crappy 2.4 slug lol . But at least by putting those hubs on if I do break something I have a better chance of getting it home . Also I pm you about those hubs you had for sale
