Oh and that reminds me, your not supposed to go above stringers bridge unless its the first weekend of the month and daylight hours, (happened to find a council/doc sign by the bridge entry/exit).

Re: CHCH guys keen on day trip early Feb
anyone have any ideas which river you prefer? or even other ideas?
I personally haven't been to Waipara river for a few years and was from main highway to mouth.
According to the Waipara River Management Strategy it appears vehicle use between white gorge and the mouth is permitted

But this the only thing I've managed to find.

Re: CHCH guys keen on day trip early Feb
Hi, I'm keen to find new 4 wheelers as I doubt my mate will ever get his Disco fixed, so....
I can offer a tour guide to the Makerikeri river from Rossiters Road to Henrys Ford Road. Not as easy as you might think, grade 3 - 4 I guess. I can drive it in the winch truck without winching - most of the time.
Or Okuku river from Ashley 4wd track to boulder garden. Not driven this one this year so don't know how hard it will be. For those that like rock crawling the boulder garden is a challenge. I've never gotten more than about the first 500m.
First one is about an hour, and the Okuku about 3 hours so could do both in a day with decent trucks. Could do Makerikeri in an evening.
Happy to go out most times, sooner the better !
You can pm me on here or 027 699 1916, cheers Andy.

Re: CHCH guys keen on day trip early Feb
Yep, that's the one. Stream at bottom of Rossiters Road is actually Makerikeri river. That bridge is about half way to Henrys Ford. Most of run is narrow between willow trees with a fair few holes and bogs along the way. Its taken me 2 years to forge the track as I don't go for the chainsaw thing. If a tree is in the way you should have to find a way round it (assuming you can't bulldozer it). Don't look at the river where you are thinking and think its easy.
May the force be with you.

So Yeti, is that you Wayne? Know all the trucks from your photo's, was it the 4x4 events xmas trip? Did you go from the quarry and miss the first half from Rossiters road?
How about a Makerikeri trip sat or sun?
Open to all not just Yeti! Not suitable for shineys though.

Re: CHCH guys keen on day trip early Feb
There is a lot less water in the Makerikeri now than those photos show.
Can I make suggestion - please take a chainsaw and clear the access along the main river flow rather than taking to the banks, flattening trees and bush as has been done recently. This river is literally over my back fence, its an awesome little piece of wilderness and very natural, it is a habitat for lots of birdlife etc that make the area real unique. Personally I have no issue with vehicles driving up the main flow as that helps keep it clear and besides it is washed out and rehashed by the river fairly often in winter, but the banks are there to keep the river in place and its surprising how many locals, kids and their parents, including myself, who live in the area and enjoy a nice evening wander up the river (after the vehicles have finished their short hour of play) and its not necessary to have a ripped up environment. Where some of the side tracks have been made is right where the back of the domain meets the river.
Basically just tread lightly as usual, enjoy the place and try to leave as little evidence as possible that some one has been there - its not just some old creek bed out the back of the country - its people's and wildlife's home and environment too.
If there is a need to climb banks, churn stuff up etc, it is better to choose the open Ashley riverbed (away from the nesting birds of course) where there is lots of area to play and shingle banks to climb where the river will reshape it next high flow and create a whole new playground again.
I've been an avid 4x4er (still am, just don't have as capable a 4x4 atm) and driven a lot of the rivers in this area, its interesting being on the other side of the fence (literally) when it comes to this sort of this thing. You'd be disgusted if someone drove over bushes in your local park aye.
I'll be keen to join a trip along here, and can even grab my chainsaw and bring it along.

I'm moving to chch at the end of Feb but will be down over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd. If you decide to go out then and some one has a spare seat, I'm keen. Happy to drag the winch rope as often as need be.
