Maungakotukutuku Road (Paraparamu) - ok to drive?

Post by lax2wlg »

Apparently there is some good driving here, just out of Paraparamu, about 50km from Wellington.

By all research it seems legit but Just wondering if anyone can confirm that it is legal to drive here. First saw it on this build thread and am now keen to check it out.

Is that a MTB website

I only ask because alot of the tracks mentioned are behind locked gates where you need a permitted trip leader and keys to get into.

As far as playing at the end of Maungakotukutuku Road, I believe it is not supposedly allowed but everybody does it and theres seems to be no repercussions from it

The short answer to most questions around the legality of roads is to first check it on the Walking Access Commission map system http://www.walkingaccess.govt.nz/walkin ... s-mapping/ that identifies legal roads. Remember always that sometimes a track might not exactly follow the surveyed route and that might then put you onto private land.

Thanks for the advice.. so skid what your saying is yes it happens, but probably not a good idea?

Yes that was a MTB site...

According to the walkingaccess.govt website it is indeed public area.

Dont want to go there if it is frowned upon though...

CCVC do regular runs in their, often come in from the Totara Park end and drive through and out. Someone there would know the low down.

CCVC are in the akaratarawa forest

Dont get confused with the entrance thru a locked gate over the creek past the quad ride place

I believe this thread is about the area further on at the end of the road

Flag contacting the council, people go in there ALL the time in trucks. If you do venture up the hill to the summit, probably not advisable to go into the forestry area, but it is interesting for a walk (and lots of goats).

Also watch out for bogans in Falcons riding on the bonnets.

These were all taken at the Mungatooks.
