RE4R01A Trans in WD21 Terrano TD27T

Hi,
I have Nissan Terrano WD21 TD27T with the RE4R01A Transmission.
Now when the tires are deflated to around 10psi and i'm in either 4H or 4L in sand, even a little sand mixed with gravel. I can put it in 1st gear or Drive and the tires wont start to turn until around 3000rpm? Even at that i move very slowly and it can get up to 100°C in about 5 minutes.
Trans fluid is at correct level, looks and smells fine and i have a big V8 davies crag oil cooler.
This is very frustrating while 4wding, car drives fine on road and gear changes are fine.
What could be causing this?
Cheers
Travis

I'd say the torque converter is had it. if it was the bands in the transmission the oil would be brown even 1000 k's after a oil change from slippage and over heating.

Don't be fooled by the apparent ok operation on hard surfaces as it take's very little effort to get a vehicle moving after all one human can get a car rolling just by pushing it.

It's when you get into soft stuff that really tells the condition of a driveline.

I'm pretty sure i don't have a lsd.
Where would i get a torque converter from in Australia?
What is the standard stall speed of the stock TC?
If it is, it should be pretty easy to change over?

don't quote me but the stall would be around 800 rpm give or take.

yeah you do have an LSD I think it was standard...the condition varies between fuckn tight to... i think thats fooked....depending on age/wear etc.

Any automotive part's supplier should be able to source one for you, they are used in so many different models(and makes of car mazda etc) it shouldn't be to hard to find one.

You will have to separate the auto from the engine to do it. download the service manual. google.

I was talking to a mechanic that re-conditions torque converters and has quite a few for the RE4R01A and he said the stock stall speed is 1700-1800rpm.
And in the manual for this transmission it gives a stall speed of 2440 - 2640rpm?
I did the stall test and it was 2900rpm

Okay,
So i thought to change the transmission fluid just for good measure.
It was pretty black when it came out. Had no idea because it looked pretty red when i pulled out the dip stick.
Before the fluid change all gear changes and torque converter lock up was fine.
Now it slips pretty bad from 1-2 and 2-3 and when on the highway it will slip in and out of lock up.
Took it to the beach yesterday, it was a pretty hard beach that ive been on many times before without letting the tires down.
Could not even make it 100m on the beach, 4H or 4L, revving it guts out and not moving, trans temp got to 100°C in about 2 minutes had to let the tires right down to turn around and get off.
So i'm thinking its pretty much stuffed.
Iv'e got a Manual Navara with the TD27 non Turbo engine i can get my hands on. Can i just swap my Auto for that manual? :?:

Would you be able to give me a ruff step by step instructions to get the auto out and put the manual in?
And is there anything on the manual I should replace while it is out?

yeah, don't use the standard D21 Manual gearbox, use a Terrano 11. R20.

Okay, iv'e got a FSW71C gearbox with the TD71C #1 Bellhousing and transfer case this is out of a D21 Navara with the TD27 non-turbo engine.
Should this gearbox be a straight bolt in, and all electrics / speedo work with it.

What would be the difference between this box and a Terrano II R20?
Is this FSW71C strong?

Good luck with the R20 box. i paid 300 odd pounds for mine off Ebay in the UK. and then it needed new layshaft bearings. I don't think any R20's were imported here with a factory manual.

The one you want is a TD27eti R50 terrano box...i have seen one in the last 3 years that's manual. lol . that is a striaght swap mechanically.

the FS5W71C was also used in the 180sx and silvia, 300zx so should be plenty strong enough.

if using nivara/terrano combo i think they are slightly different. there is a post around here some where with pictures of the differences.
