Hi guys
My names mark recently just bought my first 4x4. Got myself a prado. Pretty standard but will eventually do some things to it.

Am wondering if anyone knows of any Tracks I would be capable of doing. I did the red rocks a couole of weekends ago and loved the buzz.

Any help is appreciated

Few peeps up kapiti way. Keep an eye out on the trips section as we usually post up when doing mungatooks or odlins road.

Cheers
Matt

Look into getting out on easy trips with CCVC Club who will teach you and guide you then its onwards and upwards from there

Welcome Mark..

As was told to me when I got my first wagon, seat time cannot be bought. Learn how your Prado handles and what it and you can and cannot do as it is now... Then you will see how far you want to be able to go, and then what mods are needed to get there.

Seat time means one thing getting out there... The Tararua Club is up your way too.

Cheers for the advice guys. Ill look at joining the ccvc abd go from there.
In terms of my truck I was looking at sticking some chunkier tyres on it. Any suggestions on good (fairly cheap) tyres and size that would be appropriate.
Would a lift kit be advised?

Do some searching on here as there will be plenty of build ideas.

Most common for most trucks is to do a 2in lift with springs and shocks, 31-33in tires, manual hubs, and tow hooks.

4wdbits.co.NZ is a great site.

Matt.

Welcome Mark
If yours is the independent suspension Prado, I'd:
-inspect & replace/rebush steering rack
-inspect lower balljoints if it is an affected recalled model (bj failure)
-service centre differential

Throw up a pic of your truck :)

Ok I'll have a look at those things above. Pretty sure everything should be sweet. I bought it off a mechanic in Paraparaumu who did a lot of work to it. It's just a standard 1996 lwb 8seat prado. 3 litre turbo diesel. Got my eye on some 31x 10 wheels on trade me so might try my luck.
What do manual hubs do and how do I tell of its independent suspension. Pretend I know a lot about cars to the misses but not always true ha

Nothing wrong with a 90 series.

Do some research before you buy anything. Get the biggest tires you can fit.

I've been looking around and I reckon 10 inch wides would work as long as it has a 20 offset. Anyone ever had trouble with centre diff apparently they are pretty weak

hey mate !!

great truck they are a wicked truck! ive never herd of any troubles with center diff??? try to remember slow is the key unless your in mud lol matt above is right we both went out a few weekends ago

my number is 0272012916 greg is my name

I had 33s on a surf its a similar body but they r pretty big and that's a lot of stress on suspention components ,drive line in the front end

they are independent front and are a good truck

FYI

Had a SWB 90 series prado at work today running 265/75 R16 on a 16x8" rim with -20 offset.
The owner was removing the wheels and putting factory back on due to rubbing on inner guards.

15 or 16x10" rims only come in -44 offset and in my opinion would never work on your vehicle.

Just be careful and dont rush into buying something that wont work. Do your research thoroughly ;-)

Cheers guys. Good advice and a relief to know my truck should do the bizzo when I want it to.
So may be the best bet for wheels would be to stick with original wheels and go for some chunkier tyres? Or would a more appropriate offset do the trick if I did go bigger.
How dangerous is odlins road. I was coming back from the hutt on the weekend and started climbing up the first bit but had a nervous misses in the front seat so didnt want to risk it

Hi Mark, nice to see you on here.
Odlins Rd is ok with a reasonable truck and some experience, wouldnt recommend you go alone especially if you are learning, it will bite you in butt if not ready for it, pleased to see you were cautious.

Went in a couple weekends back from the summit off the Akas with lax2wlg. So definitely ok to do, but we are experienced with trucks reasonably well set up. Your truck will get scratched up a bit in places, but mainly pretty good road. Keep an eye out on the forums for trips in the area, join in and keep an open mind and ears. :D

Welcome on board, you wont regret it.

Rally woods is on Feb 15 and there will be a bunch of peeps there.

Odlins or mungatooks probably not long after that.

I would think 32s on an 8 in rim would be sweet on your truck but find the 90 series forums and see what works. If you are going to lift the truck that might change your tire options.

As Skid mentioned tyres are expensive so find someone with direct experience.

Matt.
