How to remove speedo drive WD21 Terrano

Post by traversd »

Hi there,

Recently done a body swap, had a damaged 3 door 1992 td27t man, and swapped a 1994 widebody 5 door td27t man body on, using the loom and dash that was in the new body.

The now body has the round dash which is driven by an electric speedo sensor, but my terrano has a mechanical speedo drive.

I see others on this forum have swapped them before, but I can't figure out (or find sorta detailed instructions) how to remove the speedo drive on my gearbox?

So can any of you guys help me out on how to remove the speedo sensors from the gearboxes?

And I can't see where the wiring for the electronic speedo sensor is? where does the eletric speedo drive wiring go as I can't seem to find it?

Cheers.
Travers.

There is a 10mm bolt holding it in. Just undo the bolt and pull it out.
Unfortunately it has been in there a long time and may be seized, if so a good soaking in crc or similar may help. The cable drive is a bit easier as you can screw the cable on and have something to hold on to, the electric sender is a bit harder.
If you do break the electric sender dont panic as they are the same as an r33 skyline sender. When the drift boys fit an r33 big box to an r32 they need a cable sender so there should be heaps of electronic senders at your local drifters house.

Ah thankyou, very useful.
Will message a couple of my RB obssesed mates haha.
(big box refers to the 25det box right? :?: ) )

So the sender on any R33 skyline will do the job? Or just the manual ones?

Also, is there a plug on the end of the electronic speedo drive? I can't see any wiring that goes to the gear box from the original body, where would this be hiding?

Cheers, for that.
Hopefully get this done!

It would have to be a manual 25det box. The big box takes a longer speedo drive than the small box. The drift boys put a terrano 4x4 speedo cable drive into the big box. The loom for the gear box will plug in by the battery and is probably still on the donor vehicle as it is part of the engine harness assuming it is manual, if auto it will be part of the trans loom and plug in by the brake master cylinder.

Alright, I asked around a bit, and nobody i directly know seems to have one.

A guy in Rangiora has one from an automatic Terrano that he will sell me for 95 bucks.

The donor vehicle I have was a manual, will the speedo drive from the automatic one work fine with mine since they plug in, in different places?

I'm guessing I will need the wiring that goes from the speedo drive to the plug by the battery? I will check the plug on mine, but is it likely I could use the wiring from the automatic one to plug into mine?
(as there does not seem to be any wiring or anything heading out of the engine bay?)

Cheers again, appreciate the knowledge.

the guy at automotive parts in rangiora thinks he has a manual one possibly. Minus the speedo guage.

how can you tell the difference between them?

If it plugs and works does that mean it is all go?
And could I take the speedo from an automatic cluster, and put it in the manual cluster?

Since I don't have a speedo hooked up will i be able to tell?

Cheers,

An auto cluster will have the PRND21 indicator in it. The auto speedo should fit into the manual cluster.
