Y60 Front axle seal

Post by klompy »

Does any one know if there is a better after market seal than original.I'm sure I saw a video on you tube and the yank was fitting an after market seal that he had a rave about. If not I will go genuine.

Are you talking the inner axle seal inside the ball on the housing?

If so ...I heard a rumour that the GQ/Y60 inner axle seals are the same as used on the hilux solid axles. If that is true, these are two options which might work for you:

BNT sell them for approx $10, seem to have lasted ok in my truck. If they are regularly leaking might be a bent diff housing thats causing the problem.

can be caused by worn brass bush that the cv contacts on , grooves worn in the axle , or other worn hub components ,

From memory it has a needle bearing not a bush but will have a good look at it all when I strip it down again.

I replaced my leaking ones with a Terrain Tamer (sp?) kit I got from BNT. Had no problems with them. You are correct about the needle bearing setup.

I'd give Auckland Bearings a ring (09) 444 6566, that was who I got recommend last time I needed seals, good to deal with.

4WDBits sell the seals too - http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails ... uctID=4120 - If you want to buy OTS.

Genuine seals tend to be more expensive I've found.

We have the Hilux Trail Gear Trail-Safe seals Image on the shelf too: http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=4870

I've just put a vernier on the 2 seals side by side and they are almost identical. Next time I do an inner axle seal I'll be trying the Trail Gear Trail-Safe seal.

By memory...
O/d is the same Y60 shoulder is 0.75-1.00mm larger then L/C
The L/C seal do fit as i use them rather than Y60 as i was getting a packet of 10 for around $4.50+gst each

When i was running L/C diffs i went through lots of cvs and each time it took the seal out.
Time will tell how the Y60 holds up
Altho i have a set of c/molys to eventually go in once all the spiders have been sorted out

Hilux one is also thinner from memory when I've done them but might be useful if you have a groove worn in the shaft that's cutting the seals like mine did
