hilux 4x4 axle stubs for trailer?

Post by bigstu »

Hi I have access to a few hilux front axle bits for cheap Im looking at building a tandem trailer this winter, kind of an excuse to get my wife to let me buy a bigger better mig Although the trailer would have to be on the cheap.
What would the hollow stub 4wd front spindles be like? I want to run 6 stud hubs with hilux rims and thought it would be easy enough to weld flanges on each end of the axles to bolt them onto then they would just run four 4wd hilux hubs and possibly brakes on two of them? I thought nissan navara 2wd spindles would be the go as they are a solid stub with 6 stud but the spindle it self isn't just a flat mounting flange like the hilux 4wd.

any thoughts or ideas be great.

Thanks Stu

thought about this as well as i had a few lying round but in the end i found it not worth the hassle.ended up machining myself a set of stub axles, front half a copy of the stub axle and then a 40mm stub to slide into axle.cost me a hundy for material and then couple of hours machining time.then used all standard hilux stuff, seals, bearings, stub nuts n bearings.then as u have in mind added a plate and then used all hilux brakes etc

Did this years ago, Just make sure the axle tube is plugged, to stop any water that may enter thru to your wheel bearings, if you go into deep water.

Thanks for the input sounds the go then, my concern was the fact they are hollow not solid like normal trailer ones, in a tandem setup what sort of weight would they handle?

Thanks Stu
